Back Window Problem.

My back window wont roll down. I did some searches on YotaTech and on here, but really I wouldn't know where to begin to look. Can you guys give me any ideas?

make sure that your window lock

button on the driver's side door is not pushed down. That will prevent the back window from opening.
 
No, that was the first thing I checked. But I only knew to do that because of when I had my windows tinted I locked the windows and I noticed it.
 
I sometimes have the same problem and I noticed that it's getting stuck on the rear wiper motor. You might want to look into that.
 
rear defrost also inoperable?

I had a similar situation just a few weeks back. Something to the effect that the rear window has to be "reset" to remember where the full shut position is. First see if your rear window defrost is also not working, to confirm the symptom is not just the rear window by itself.

Check your rear window wiper and rear defroster-it is my guess those are out of commission as well. Check the fuses, but if those are fine then use the inside rear window control -or the key at the rear hatch to raise the window all the way to the top.

It is my guess you will see it move just a hair of an inch, or by putting it all the way down and then all the way up you will "reset" the memory.


If your defrost and wiper are working fine then check the window at both switch locations to narrow down the trouble.

Let us know what you find out.... I think this is a fairly common problem that a lot of us never really knew about it until it happened to us personally.
 
Good news! I turned on the rear defrost, ran the back wiper, and held the window button up, and next thing I know it rolls down. You have no idea how relieved I am to not have to pay for that new window motor and to put it in. Thanks for the reply, I appreciate it a lot. And I got it working just in time to go wheeling tonight.

So I found the wiper motor and housing but I cant get to it to see what's loose because of the crap in the way. Any thoughts?
 
REAR WINDOW!!!

I first want to say I have only been a 4-Runner owner for about 4 months. I have owned many Jeeps in my day this is my first 4-Runner. Since I bought this truck I have never looked back. I
 
I second everything said, especially you Ron, major props. Last week I started my car only to find the window wouldn't go down anymore. Been so busy with school lately I didn't have time to look into it, just checked the console end of the switch and everything checked out. Hopped on the computer five minutes ago, read this thread, went outside and VOILA, definitely a great start to my day, it's dark as hell outside but i still might rock my window down hahaha

Yes devil man I hate that feeling when something is just not working right, kind of gets under your skin until it gets solved. I don't think I was suggesting exactly what worked for you-but hey it got you where you needed to be!

Such a simple answer, but great effects! Glad that some people post even the most obvious...
I had the same experience: The back window was suddenly not opening anymore, but the motor was ok (key in the hatch still worked).
I opened the switch and tested it's contacts, but nothing helped. I was redy to order a new switch when I stumbled across this great hint. Turned out, my wife mixed up the door opening and window blocking switch and didn't switch it back. And I, of course was not aware of which windows all get blocked....

This is an amazing site, for the second time I found an incredibly easy solution to what was a pain in the as problem for me. I have been meaning to replace my rear window relay for some time because I couldn't raise the rear window with the console button, it went down but would only go up with the key in the tailgate. One day it wouldn't go up or down inside or with the key and I thought "There you go assh*le, now you won't be able to get at the relay from the back tailgate, you're going to have to climb over the back seat and work on it from your belly, DOH!!!" Well, I tried the little trick above and now I can open the window and drop the tailgate. What a relief. Who would of thought of such a simple solution. Now I can screw off for another few months before I replace the relay. :D

Kudos to GZKRUTOY!!!

We had all the symptoms - no rear wiper, defroster, squirter, or window up/down. Thanks to gzkrutoy's simple reminder of releasing the window safety lock button, I got the rear window up the last 1/2" and all other functions work properly.

You guys ROCK!! You started my new year off in a good way. Many thanks!!

lucky you guys?

So i just got my 96 runner limited, and the back window is a mystery to me. it will go up or down at random, rear wiper doesn't work but the squirter works? when i unplug it (its a larger relay i think) then its stops going up and down and just doesn't work completely? the key doesn't work the window but will lock the door? any ideas for a noob. ? by the way, from what i've read this site is awsome and i love my runner. i had an 87 runner a while ago and had to get back. please help me with this issue, thanks everyone

I have a 2006 4Runner V8 i changed my old battery and expecting that some automatic stuffs will stop working no problem with side windows but my remote won't work on my back window to roll down and also my key won't work but the upside down button near my radio works fine... is there anything to be reset on my car? Please help me...

HA!!! This worked for me as well! My window wouldn't go down, so I turned on the rear defroster and the rear wiper, and it works!! :D
