Back window / rear of 4Runner is always dirty.

A good designed roof spoiler that is aligned with the top of the roof, carefully arranged in the area of the rear edge of the roof above the rear window, will cause the rear-end separation edge of the airflow to shift toward the rear and thus the dead zone behind the vehicle is reduced, which improves air resistance. This means that the original roof spoiler could possibly help reduce air resistance at high speed (over 100 mph). In reality the original roof spoiler would have a limited effect because high speed has been limited by electronics (but still may have some effect).

Now the question of the 05 spoiler change. Due to the limited effect of the original designed roof spoiler and the sulfur smell problem, Toyota decided to add flow deflection (the 05 spoiler change) to create the down flow of air that deflects rain, debris, and helps deflect sulfur fumes away from rear window.

I believe that Toyota and its engineers would not waste time and money in changing the design of the roof spoiler if it had no effect. I don

What about using Rain-X on the back window? The dust and road debris might have less adhesion to the window when you use a surfactant product like Rain-X. If the stuff can't stick to the window, it can't build up. Just an idea.

BTW, I ordered my '06 specifically without the spoiler and drl's, but got about everything else.

I notice less dirt on my 06 with the spoiler and on other SUV'S I've had , not alot but less. It's seem's to be the nature of the beast.....

The 4th-gen already has a hydrophobic/hydrophillic (depending on how you want to interpret it) coating on the rear and side windows that repels water.

My 4Runner is always dirtier in the rear after its been out driving in the rain.

Well, it looks like the obvious solution is quite apparent.... Just drive the darn thing backwards! That would the government's solution.

Then we'd be all whining about bug guts on the rear of the 4Runner!

Rain-X is great when it's freshly applied on windows. Windows are dry and clear. However, my biggest beef with Rain-X is that dirt sticks to the glass like crazy. The glass is really slick after Rain-X is applied, after about two weeks and dirt that sticks to the glass can't be hosed off. Also, it doesn't ever seem that it can be removed or cleaned off completely. IMO, Rain-X is more trouble than its worth.

It comes off easily with vinegar.

REAR AIR DEFLECTOR

The drag coefficient (cd) for the 4R is 0.39, I remember seeing it somewhere before. Little details like that just stick in my mind for whatever reason :D

Hey hank,
Is this measuremenr for the Old design or the new design?

Just curious.

Dax

And also, is the sulfur smell reduced with the new design? I dislike the smell, specially since i tend to gun it at the green lights.

If you have the sulfur smell problem take it to a dealer and have them perform the TSB! :bash:

That will minimize or completely remove the smell.

Are you kidding? if not, do you have more info on this.

Thanks

I don't have a PhD in aerodynamics.

I can, however, that real world experience has taught me that a spoiler helps keep the back of the car clean. I have owned nearly identical cars - one with the spoiler and one without - and the difference was significant.

While shopping for a 4Runner, the lack of a spoiler wasn't a deal-breaker, but I definitely put a priority on cars that had one.
