Backup camera intermittent

Last week the backup camera in my 2012 TE stopped working. In reverse there was nothing in the rear view mirror. The next day it started working again and has been working fine since. Of course the dealership cannot find anything wrong.

Has there been any reports of backup camera failures in the 5th gen?

I am having the same issue with my 2010 limited. The last few weeks the backup camera has not been working every time. Hopefully someone has a solution.

I have had mine (LE) not work once or twice. Each time I turned the car/truck/rig off and restarted and all was well. Hate the stereo blocking part of my screen when Bluetooth or satellite radio kicks in, also hate that it blocks the whole screen when someone calls. My 7 cents

Hmm. While my camera hasn't quit in my '12TE, it flickers sometimes like it's gonna. Mines the non-JBL, picture in the mirror version.

Any way, it sounds like a loose wire kind of problem with yours. Crappy dealer that can't run that down, IMHO.

Not working anymore

Mine just died this morning. I'll be checking fuses when I get home, then taking it in for a look...

My wife told me that our camera stays on randomly. If she goes straight into D from R the camera occasionally gets stuck on.

Has anyone else had this issue?

bumping this up to see if anyone has found a solution for the intermittent backup camera. I am going to start the mod for a switch next month when I have some time...but until then.

I had the rear view mirror replace after one week when bought new. Try wiggling the wire behind the mirror, it may be the same issue as I experienced. The camera was bit the issue with mine.

I am still having a problem with the backup camera. The other day I did the mod to add a switch. My issue is still there.

Sometimes the camera works as intended, on in reverse. When this is working I can use the switch to activate it at any time.

Other times, the camera will not work in reverse or with the switch. The screen does not change. NO blue screen or gray lines.

At this point I am assuming that there is a problem with the signal to the head unit to activate the backup camera.

Any ideas?

Eh... well I really can't think of anything at the moment without actually seeing the vehicle. We had a Corolla... or Highlander (I can't remember which one since I didn't work on it) that had a similar issue I don't recall what we did to fix that one.

I assume you guys all have the ETune and/or Display Audio w/ Navigation? Have you guys tried seeing if Diagnostic Mode can be helpful? I don't remember if the 5th gens have this feature, but I love using it to quick check issues with headunits.

-Turn vehicle on
-While holding either the "Audio" Button or the "Apps" button turn the headlamps on and off 5 times
-The screen should go into a funky looking DOS like screen, this is diagnostic mode and can be useful for finding issues, you can exit it by cycling the key.

So I am having an issue with my Entune based backup camera. For the past few weeks it either does not work at all when shifting into reverse or it works in a grey scale dim environment. All contrast and brightness settings are in middle setting. Itried the Diagnostic Mode (on 5th Gens its "Audio" button held down and three cyclings of the headlight switch) and the "camera" button is shown but not operational. I do not know if this is standard or if the diagnostic mode camera button is greyed out because mine is not working.

I had a similar problem on my tundra this past winter and it was water in the plug under the bed, the water was allowing the power to pass via the stop signal so every time I pressed the brake the camera screen would light up

Hmm, that's a good question. I wish I had an answer for you because this goes back into the whole EnTune/Toyota information not being very clear crap.

But I do believe there may be a TSB regarding this, I'll see if I find anything.

Post Note/Update-

Did not find a TSB, you may want to take it to the dealership as maybe the camera is failing or something? Was there anything specific prior to it starting to not work properly?

Intermittent performance, then no picture, then grey scale but really dim, then nothing, then back to dim grey currently. Sounds like connection or cabling problem I think. I did basic troubleshooting including shift lever position, brake depression, etc and I checked connections at camera and back of head unit. Thanks for checking though! I will fiddle with it some more and let you guys know. Would really like for someone with a working Entune camera to access the service feature as outlined above to see if the "camera" function is available or not. Turn on vehicle, push and hold "audio" and turn on and off headlight switch completely three times to get the screen.

JBL w/Nav Camera stopped working

All of a sudden my screen won't switch to rear view image when I put it in reverse? It just stays on whatever screen is currently up? It almost seemed like I must have accidentally adjusted a setting that shut off the camera but there is no setting like that. Any ideas?

Possibly the switch in your shifter that tells the camera you are in reverse?

That's a good suggestion.... I might have to look into it further. Thanks. This is so annoying. One of the first things I've had go wrong with the 4Runner since I got it.

I have done a little more research into this problem. I am still having the issue where my camera either:
1. works fine
2. gray screen
3. colors washed out and wrong
4. shaking image
5. does not work at all

When the camera does not work at all, I go into the service mode and it is not listed. It's like the computer did not recognize it on boot up.

When the camera is working, I can enter service mode and see it there.

I have a switch installed so I can see the reverse camera all the time. When the camera is not working, the switch will not cause it to work or show up in service mode. When the camera works, the switch functions fine to bring up the image and switch back to GPS screen. I had the issue before I installed the switch.

I am thinking that if the software does not see the camera when booting due to a bad connection or camera, then it will not work until the car is restarted and the camera is found.

Mine seems to be getting worse, I only have the camera about 15% of the time now.
