Greetings. Amongst a few things that have come up in the first month or two of purchasing a 2000 Highlander 5 Spd 4WD we recently realized our reverse/backup lights weren't working. We always back into the driveway and know that they did work before.
Crawled under and found a damaged switch (pic taken after pulling connections apart):
As most will appreciate there's quite a bit of connector plastic missing on both sides. We reconnected and, when sitting just right, the reverse lights worked. Didn't have time to get out to buy replacement parts for a couple days and during that time the lights completely stopped working so we did a short circuit test like below and the harness proved good:
Bought a replacement switch (8421052050) at the dealer but when I requested the mating connector was told they couldn't look that up but needed a part #. Surprised me but fortunately found the pn:
9098011250
They also sold me wires with terminals and crimp splices. Here's some tools and parts (see the new switch):
Pulled harness from loom and cut off broken connector:
Spliced in new connector
Shrink wrap on each splice and then the pair of wires. Reinserted wire into loom, removed broken switch, replaced with new switch, and connected them and now:
