Bad balancing?

Kind of but not necessarily. Just seems like this forum more than any other I've been on has bad luck with tire balancing. I dunno. Maybe 4runner's are more sensitive//susceptible to a bad balance job than other makes/models.

If you look at the link that MONTYMTB posted earlier in this thread, it mentions how Toyota had a TSB published that aknowledged the use of a wheel adapter was necessary for the most accurate blancing.

To improve the accuracy of Dynamic Off-Car wheel balancing on all OEM Toyota five and six lug wheels, a precision wheel adapter kit must be used. For the greatest accuracy and repeatability, Toyota recommends using the Haweka adapter kit available through the Toyota Approved Dealer Equipment catalog. The kit consists of a precision ground centering cone for truck alloy wheels and a flange plate.

What I find strange is ALL 4 tires are wearing on the outside edge after only two weeks?? That just can't be right. Especially in the back. It's a solid axle and unless something's way out of whack, to have that kind of wear without some kind of steering pull is very odd. Did they rotate the tires from front to rear to cause this wear? Outside wear on a tire is caused either by a toe in condition or a positive camber condition, either of which condition in the rear would be a major problem.

OP, did you have any problems before the tire install?

OP, take some pictures of this edge wear on your tire. Also, a pic of your alignment print out.

That's what I was thinking. I mean the wheel balance/shake at 55mph is one thing, but equal & visible outer-edge wear on all 4 tires after 2 weeks is raising some flags.

Pics would be helpful as well as a report on tread depth and tire pressure monitoring.

So this is where you guys are going to laugh, my local tire shop never gave me a print out of my alignment. They took the truck off my hands everytime and told me she was ready to roll. I agree that tires being worn on the back is odd but I swear they're already wearing. My guess is that they took them off balanced and rotated them again. They didn't give a shit is my guess they're just trying to get me outta there. I'm taking my truck to a specialist later today that I trust and if he fixes it, I already told the local tire shop they're picking up the bill on this one.

Yes I know all about the adapter and again, maybe my family and I got lucky but we've never had a balance issue on either our 94 4runner nor my 2000. I'm not trying to start an argument or say people are crazy or what not. Just an observation I had.

Just an update. I took my runner to my local pope-Davis and had their "special tire guy" balance the tires. They have one of those Hunter road force balancers... Please excuse my ignorance of balancing. Lol. The manager of the store told me that if the balancing didn't work, bring it back and they'd try to go through Michelin to get me some new tires. Shocker, it didn't work. He said it was a possibility that the tires were a little more rounded on certain sides than others. Oh well, I guess I'll be heading back there tomorrow.

hunter road force balancing....huge difference with A/T or M/T tires

A Hunter Road Force balance job done by an incompetent operator is just as bad as any other bad balance job. Ask me how I know.

What's up guys. Good news, turns out my tires were bad. Thank God for honest tire shops. I went through a pope Davis right up the road from my house and they were awesome. Instead of going back to the discount tire I got my tires from, they ordered me new tires (free of charge) sent my old ones back, mounted and balanced the new ones in roughly 4 hours at no cost to me. They warranties them out when they easily could've told me it was my problem. The guy thoroughly looked over my suspension and said LBJ, inner and outer tire rod ends were perfect. Said that it was literally just a bad set of tires. So beware anyone thinking of getting the new KO2's!! They look great but if you have any problems, don't hesitate to get them checked out. Lesson learned.

Nice to hear you got it worked out. Im about to jump into the tire buying game myself. I lived a few miles from you in Greenville/Spartanburg/Hendersonville my entire life. 42 years. I just recently moved to Iowa with my wife who got a job here.

Very nice. I bet you miss it, I always think cold when I think Iowa. Lol. Good luck with your tire selection. Was a no brainer for me, just a little food for thought. Best price doesn't always equate to beat service/warranty.
