Bad Mama Jama Bench Vice

Hey Dudes,

I finally decided to invest in a real vice and get rid of that little toy I've been using forever. My old vice was a Craftsman with a 3 1/2" jaw.

The new vice is made by Yost, model FSV-6, and it has a 6" jaw. It's forged, not cast, so it's strong. It comes with a pretty hefty price tag, $240. Now that I'm wrenching more and have some projects coming up that require a vice, I figured it was a good time to upgrade.

This thing is beefy. Weighs 42 pounds. I haven't used it yet, but by the look of it, this thing is Bonafide! Even the name is cool. YOST!

Where is it made?

Personally, I'll stick to an old USA made Columbian or Wilton bullet. Nothing new can touch old iron.

I'll probably have an old bulletproof vise on my workbench one day. Colombian/Reed/Wilton/Rock Island/Prentiss are all great. Gotta finish my workbench still :focus:

Very nice! Love the old ones too! I wish I had taken my Grandfathers bench vise after he passed. I hope my Brother has it.
I'm using a 6" Irwin from Lowes. Very solid!

The machinist vises from Yost are still made in the USA but cost $500 and up. Taiwan or Mexico is my guess. Still very nice. I have to ask why there is an air horn in the garage though.....

I have a 8" Columbian from the late 50s. I also have a Charles Parker from 1909 from my great grandfather's fabrication shop in which he built railroad ties for Southern RxR companies.

Why the air horn? I originally bought it to piss off my neighbor who had a dog that barked all day, but I never really used it for that. That neighbor is gone now, thank God. I'm a 1/12th owner of a cabin built in the 1870's that's located in a mostly abandoned gold mining town called Forest City. A non-profit I joined has built 35 miles of trails around the town and we mountain bike them. There's no cell service in the town and some of the homes don't have land lines either so we use signals like air horns or sirens to let people know it's time to ride, eat dinner or whatever.

Now I'm having a little Bench Vice Envy. I like old school stuff and probably should have searched Ebay first for an old-timey vice. Oh well, I'm sure my Taiwan Special will hold up just fine.
Any chance you could post some pics of your vices, especially the one from your great grandfather?
