Bad Service... No oil change till 10k?

Oil changes for life

My dealer included "Free Oil Changes" for as long as I own the vehicle. I will see them every 10,000 miles for the next 400,000 miles! I'm good with that interval.

40,000 / year = 400,000 in 10 years :)

I will have to update my post from above. The day after I had my service done at Valencia Toyota I replaced the OEM skid plate with an aftermarket one. When I removed the original skid plate I got a nice shower of gravel from the Joshua Tree run the week before.

This set off a big red flag. You can't replace the oil filter without removing the skid plate. Also after it was removed I looked up at the oil filter housing and it was dirty like it had never been touched.

The service manager sent me an email asking for 5 star reviews. I had an email from Toyota for the review. I waited on it and replied to Alex saying I had waited on the review but was pissed that they did not change the oil filter. He replied that they do not do business that way and to call him and bring it in.

I tried calling him multiple times in the last two weeks and left him a voicemail detailing why I was sure it was not changed. I never heard back from him so I left a very bad but truthful review.

Where I work if a job is not completed or purposely skipped hoping no one would notice and is caught it would be a high priority to get it resolved but I guess Valencia Toyota in Santa Clarita does not feel this way.

That is too bad. You wonder if there is any honest man/woman left!

I have always wondered, given the fact that it isn't exactly a straight forward process to change oil on a 5th Gen, how many of these shops just skip these steps? We'll never know.

I brought mine in for service today with 8200 miles on it. They changed the oil and filter. I did not have to ask.

I also checked the KO2s, they did not air them down to 32 even though it showed it on the 72 point inspection sheet. All my caps were there.

I bought the updated maps (microSD card) since the price dropped. They do look a little nicer with the few miles I used it so far but I have no conclusion yet.

Seems odd. How did you "know" they changed the oil/filter without you asking for it? Did they write it down somewhere? Is there a sticker in your window showing to be back at 18k miles? Did you take it there for the 5k service as well? 8200 miles is an odd interval, unless it's been 1 year, the tech could easily assume you were way late for the 5k service.

Just trying to play devil's advocate here, as many people here seem to make things harder than they really have to be when it comes to getting work done at a dealer.

Ten-year-old dino oil works fine too. And dusty filters.

(There's a nice '64 Olds Jetstar 88 convertible still in there fwiw)

I guess all this proves is that Toyotas are pretty sturdy. Or tolerant. She sold her 2003 Camry to her son's in-laws last year for $2k and it had 220,000 miles on it and it's still on the road everyday. All it ever had was new dino oil and a filter every 5k miles.

John

we had a 1964 98 olds loaded . very nice vehicle . 394 CU . .

with gas 25 cents a gallon for super premium not bad with 9 MPG..

with today's fuel probably need aviation gas mix..expensive to drive that around too much .. on that the oil changes were 3K miles the oil looked like lead gray .. reason is the gas had a ton of lead in it........

On my vehicles pre 1996 I used conventional oil and 3.5K -4K mile oil changes by me.. 380K miles passed inspection on emissions no problems . even the valve covers never came off / no leaks.

The service manager told me they would change the oil and filter as part of the 10k mile service. The service receipt also showed it was done and charge to Toyota for the parts including the oil filter element.

Today the Toyota manager called me after reading my review. He asked what time could I bring it in. That it would be corrected and not to wash it or get gas as they would take care of it.

This is not the first time a dealership properly handled a screw up by viewing an owners complaint ..

one person I know has a 4 year old GM truck . frame was rusted out . GM/dealership said NO WAY.. I told him put it on facebook ...

next day they called said the frame is coming ...........

Took mine in for the 10k mile service this past Friday. Did them a favor removing the front skid and drain plug skid before I left for home since they were full of dirt and rocks. My garage floor now looks as such below.

First puddle is from the oil filter so I know this was changed. I'm fine with this. However, the second puddle under the drain plug is not right. I cleaned it up once, took her for a drive, and the puddle is back so they must have f**ked something up.

Will have to jack up the truck and see what the hell is going on. F*ckin hell. I changed the oil at the 5k myself very carefully following the write up on here. Knew I should have just did it myself than have to deal with this crap now.

That sucks fernie. Maybe if you give them a truthful but not good review they will take care of you.

They did with mine today. They changed the oil and filter "again" according to them They also filled the gas from 1/4 tank and gave it a mini detail. I didn't need the extras, just wanted it done right. they extras were for my trouble having to waste another day to get it fixed right.

Did some poking around and found that they failed to tighten the drain bolt. The bolt was on there finger tight. Tightened with my torque wrench, problem solved.

Spoke to the service advisor nicely. His attitude was more "well what do you want me to do about it". Should have asked for a free oil change, but then I'd have to go back :lmao:

Yes, waiting for my "survey". Probably flagged in the system not to send me one : )

When I hit 5k on my new 4Runner I donned my tinfoil hat and took it in for the 5k service. They told me that only included rotating the tires and inspecting everything. I told them I wanted an oil change and they said it doesn't need it until 10k. I said I didn't want the original oil in there anymore and they said they will change it if I paid for it....so I did...$49 for a full synthetic oil change...cheapest synthetic ever!

I will probably follow the 10k or one year oil change interval from now on. You can call me whatever, say I wasted money, I don't care, I didn't feel comfortable with the factory break in oil in there for 10k. Sometimes new engines have debris.

Then I got the truck home and they over filled it....:redbrick: I fixed it myself instead of trying to deal with them fixing it. Took 15 minutes.

You guys must have some terrible luck.

I took mine in last Thursday for the 10k service. I already had the front skid plate and center caps off from when I installed the lift the week before. Checked everything after, oil was full, everything looked good underneath. They even reinstalled the center caps (which I'd left on the passenger side floorboard).

I got the factory filters (5 for $25 on Amazon) and changed the oil at 4500 miles and every 7500 after.:juggle:

As a service writer, we will do your oil change early if you really insist on it. However, what most fail to realize is that the Toyota Care Program for 2 years/25k miles only covers 2 oil change services. So once those 2 oil changes have been done under that program, you will have to pay for future oil changes even if its still under 2 years/25k miles. Also, its not unlimited services for that 2 year/25k miles period. Only 5 factory recommended services are covered within that time frame..:gossip:

Been using Amsoil for a few years now. I never go less than 10k on changes. Usually closer to 12.5k with the EA filters. I just wish all you guys would give me the $$ you are wasting on using synthetic oil and doing it every 5k! I'd love to have the $$ you are flushing down the oil drain!

Yes because Amsoil is way cheaper than synthetic.....

Well that's kind of a shitty way to advertise "FREE SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE FOR 2 year/25kmiles".
