Bad timing belt?

Ok so Earlier today I heard a squeaking noise from the engine. My truck drove fine so I didn't worry too much about it. Then I took her for a trip around the block this evening and the noise got progressively louder and the gas pedal started feeling sluggish. Then when I pulled in my driveway and took the key out of the ignition, the truck would not shut off and sounded like the starter was stuck ! I ran inside to get a wrench to disconnect the battery and it finally shut off. I also smelled burnt rubber coming from the engine but there wasn't any smoke or steam. Any ideas what this is? My truck has ~80k so I'm guessing its the timing belt. Thanks in advance.

First a question, how did you find a '96 with only 75k miles???

On to it, it's a bit hard to interpret what might be going on here but the timing belt is easy to access if you want to take a look at it. It's behind the plastic cover on the front, just a few bolts to remove it.

Sounds like thats what I'll be doing tomorrow. I'm hoping tb/wp is all it is!

May be you have a frozen bearing either in drive belts (AC idler or fan pulley) or timing belt idler or tensioner bearing. When these freeze, belt just slides on top of it and due to friction, the belt melts and gives off burnt rubber.

I would check your accessory belts not the timing belt.

UPDATE: The issue was with my starter. I had it replaced with an aftermarket part because I needed my truck back quickly. After reading up on the forum tonight, it looks like I should have just replaced the contacts on the OEM starter myself. Oh well :/
