Baja Rack on the way!

So called up Jacque on Friday and said lets go with the Long Baja Rack with sides. Later that day he called me back and said the rack was in stock! Shipped out that day from California. Jacque sent me an email on Monday with a tracking number and it is going to arrive tomorrow! I hope the install is painless.

If you are not going for the stealth, I think the Baja would be a better choice.

My stealth took a long time to get and both my rack and sunroof insert were warped when delivered. Rack was 1/2" out corner to corner. Sunroof insert was 1/4" out corner to corner and the tabs were not even either. For the money and time spent waiting, I am not overly impressed with GOBI.

I wanted the lower top hoop of the stealth and the Baja did not offer that configuration, only the utility (flat) or standard rack.

One of my decisions to go with the Baja was that the Gobi looked to have cross bars on the top that would interfere with me putting a guncase on the top. It looked with the Baja that I would be able to fit a guncase/bowcase and be able to strap it down.

I think yours is identical to my flat utility as far as the mounting goes. All I did was remove the stock rails then attach the Baja mount points, then lifted the rack onto those. Two things for installing the mounts onto the roof - get some silicone to put around the posts for the bolts and wrap the bolts with some teflon tape to completely waterproof your setup. I also used blue loctite on the bolts that secure the rack to the mounting feet for a little extra piece of mind. All in all a piece of cake, though you'll want to get someone to help you lift the rack onto the roof.

Congrats! I ordered one last week direct from Baja. Had them do a little extra fabrication that made a three week lead time. With delivery, I should be receiving around the 24th this month! Can't wait!

Just curious what yall with roof cargo racks do about washing/waxing under the rack. After seeing what the Texas sun did to unwashed parts of my old truck I don't think I'd want to leave too much crud on the roof/hood for fear of it baking into the paint.

Should I go the roof rack route, I'd seriously consider putting vinyl down on the roof prior to doing the install so I don't have to worry too much about the paint.

I have a telescoping car wash mop head that gets under my flat baja rack pretty good. I use a paint sealant on a mop head once a year or so too. My trucks silver though and easy to maintain to look good.

I thought about putting a quality 10 year vinyl down on mine before the rack but never got around to it. Vinyling yourself up there would be easy being so flat,plus nobody can see it if it's not perfect being so high up.

Takes maybe 5 minutes to put the rack on and off. Also lets me lower the rack to working height to touch up all the spots where the rack has gotten scraped up. For a regular wash I can get my hand under the rack just barely with a microfiber towel to wash. I stand on the bumper, side rails and rear tire and I can reach the whole roof.

Exactly my thoughts- I'd actually had some vinyl in the basket on amazon before I bought the rack.

Like Chrisinvermont, I've considered this too - it is so quick to unbolt the rack, I wouldn't mind having a hoist in the garage!

There is only a couple inches clearance between roof and rack so it's kind of hard to clean/wash/wax underneath the mesh area! Thanks.

Well I think I screwed something up on my install

I installed the rack and used liberal amounts of silicone around the bolt holes on the roof and used blue threadlocker and after coming home in a torrential downpour I had some water leakage inside. I know I screwed something up now...

For those that have the Baja, can you post up pics of the rack feet on the factory holes? I think I may have to loosen mine and slide them around a little.

It's just an old one I've had for years. Don't remember where I got it but it's really thin. I'll look for a name brand on it tomorrow

Mine leaked, too. I had to put silicone around the feet as well to stop leaking, but it could have been an engineering issue.

Look at The Original California Super Duster. Not necessarily the wash mops but might do a job. I've got a regular one (The Original California Car Duster, plastic handle) from local Walmart for $11, can't find such a low price anywhere online.

Ahh...yes that would be a problem. I have no lights, obviously.

As for the leaking, mine did after the first install. Pulled it and siliconed the hell out of everything and it seems to be water tight now.
