Battery ?

Are there any cautions when disconnecting the battery? I have a 2013 T4R and figure I'll have to disconnect it for some reason eventually. If I do, or it discharges somehow, are there settings or other things that will need to be reset or reprogrammed? If so, will keeping 12V across the battery terminals while the battery is disconnected prevent this? Thanks.

The first time you start it, it will immediately die. Normal, restart it.

you might have to recalibrate the compass feature to get rid of the dot next to it. Instructions are in the manual.

I've heard from my buddy who works at Toyota Las Vegas that if you disconnect the battery you have to fill up the blinker fluid before you can start it again........I'm not sure as I am not a mechanic. :faint:

Seems a pretty legit question to me. Cars have changed a lot since I got my first one . I don't now wtf would need resetting either. First start up fails?

This is a good place to learn and contribute. I think some people, including myself, forget all the weird things that can happen when the battery gets disconnected.

Compass and radio need to be reprogrammed, I think. Most importantly, you'll need to re-setup the windows. Instructions are here http://www.toyota-4runner.org/problems-warranty-issues/20637-auto-window-roll-down-feature-stopped-working.html

I'm not sure if you have to re-engage the rear parking assist sonar, if equipped.

By the way, I was driving around with my moonroof not setup in auto mode for a while until I found the link above. I think the dealer disconnected the battery for whatever reason on my first oil change and they never programmed the moonroof.

Thanks to those who provided sensible answers. That is the kind of information I was looking for. Yea, my manual (the big one) is approx 700 pages. I haven't quite made my way through it yet.

One thing that was not mentioned...when disconnecting battery, un-hook the "Negative" terminal. I know, sounds wierd but believe me, it is the proper way.

So I thought it was a legit ? too.
Would it make life easier to hook up my little 12v motorcycle battery via aligator clips when doing a battery R&R?
What does get reset?
radio?
MPG/Range guage?
Adaptive transmission?
error codes?
odometer? (lol)

If it is being replaced?....yes of course.
If merely working on the electrical system, and want to avoid damaging the wiring, the battery needs to be disconnected. Removing the Negative Cable is the safest way.

This site is definitely helpful and lots of experts share their valuable experience with automobile, T4R in particular.
You'll get "unfavourable" comments from time to time. I've seen this in some other forum, just ignore them

Yes this happened to me (re-re-start) when I took battery offline to work on lights. From what i could remember had to re-calibrate the compass, lost all trip (A,B) miles, maybe the clock (?) but the radio channels stayed.

I had a Honda which would lock out the radio and you would need to get a Code from a Honda dealer to re-activate and that was a PITA if you didn't save the code or write it in your manual.
