The WRX is a great machine with snows although I'd opt for Xice or Blizzaks. But doesn't the 4Runner have nearly 2x the clearance?

It definitely does. I've never had to drive on a road that needed that much clearance though.

The Quattro with real snow tires is awesome in rough winter conditions.

I dont disagree but it won't stop any better then a Honda accord with snow tires . No complaints about the S4 though, the thing is a mild mannered monster, not exactly an S6/7 but the linear power delivery makes it a blast to drive and launch control tickles every time

I've been here in D.C. since 2009. They've gotten a little better at clearing snow (especially after snowmageddon in 2010) and this is coming from a Buffalo native.

This will be my first weekend volunteering for an emergency response group which consists of driving essential personnel to their places of work. (I was supposed to be at Rausch Creek this weekend, but we canceled last minute).

I'll be driving home 50 miles from Columbia Md (work) at around 9pm Friday night, the storm should be in full swing by this time! I figure it should take me AT LEAST 3 hrs to get home. This drive usually takes me 1 hr during normal conditions.


I have a full compliment of water/food/blankets/recovery gear ready to go in the back- truth is I would probably be quite comfortable with my Jetboil, coffee, Mt House meals, and full comfy sleep setup if I were to get stranded on the road...:biggrin1:

Excellent point on stopping. Many autos on the road are too close and going too fast for winter road conditions.

Audi makes some incredible machines. I drove a friends TT in snow and ice and was surprised with how well it performed. And the fun factor was off the charts!

Same goes for my 4Runner. Fantastic in the winter and the clearance is great on deep days. I've been able to pull into and out of unplowed lots without any problem while others are getting stuck. If there is snow on the ground chances are good that I've flipped it to 4WD so I have the fronts pulling too. I don't know how much extra traction that gives the truck when driving but it feels more sure-footed going around corners and uphill.

Right on! I will always say that Ohio drivers are the best in the snow. Nice choice in car, too! I drive a 1990 E30 right now. Two years ago I drove my 2000 M5 back from ohio in the snow for 4 hours on summer tires. That...pushed my driving limits.

You must not be from the same part of Ohio that I am from....
