BenK's 4R Build

OME 881/890's

Seems Santa came about a month late today. OME 881/890's + diff drop. No top plate spacer. Needless to say, I can't wait til saturday. Plan is to get the Duratracs installed first thing, then install the lift, then get an alignment. More pics to come this weekend.

881/890 with 265/75/16 Duratracs

I got the lift and tires on yesterday along with an alignment. I started with all OE suspension parts that had 172k on them and rode rough. The ride with the OME 881/890s is much smoother over bumps and confident in the turns. It also brakes better now that the front end doesn't nose dive every time I touch the brakes.

The install took me, my dad, and a friend about 2.5 hours. We used a sawzall on the rear upper mounts and disconnected the LBJs on the fronts. Those were the only "tricks" we used.

Here's a quick cell phone pic after the install. Scroll up for the "before" version.

Hey, BenK...does your truck sit level with that lift set up? It looks pretty level from the picture, but can't quite tell. I'm looking to do the same lift as you and I want my truck to sit level. Also, did you add the top plate spacer for the front?

Diggin' the silver sliders, matches well. Normally not a fan of the Red Runners, but this looks like the start of a beautiful set up!

Kanger- Here's a better picture now that the lift has had a chance to settle in. I did not add the top plate spacer. This gave me about 2.5" up front and 3" in the rear. I like the look of the rake and wanted to be sure I wouldn't have a reverse rake if I loaded up the back.

Thanks BeachWagon!

Pretty sure the sliders are around 75lbs total. The lift rides really nice. It has been a huge improvement over the worn out original stuff. What ever lift setup you decide to go with, I definitely recommend ToyTec. Great customer service and fast shipping.

cool! How many miles did you have on the original shocks and stuff when you replaced them? I have about 187k all highway on mine.

Mine had about 172k on them. I heard and felt even the smallest bumps in the road at all speeds. Another thing I didn't notice until I put the lift on was how bad the front end would dive when I hit the brakes. The OME stuff doesn't have these problems.

Good to know thanks!

Spidertrax & 1" BL

I just ordered a couple more things to round out the lift I recently installed.

First is a full set of Spidertrax 1.25" wheel spacers. After some research on here and measuring on my truck, I think these are going to square off the stance perfectly. The 4R just looks kind of skinny without them IMO.

Second is a 1" body lift. For now this is strictly to get more clearance between the pinch weld and my sliders. There's no interference when I'm driving by myself, but when I have 2+ passengers the knocking starts on some pretty mild bumps. I hate the noise, I know its chipping paint that will lead to body rust, and call me what you want but I think its embarrassing when you're driving someone around in your pride and joy and you have to explain what the loud knocking noise is. The long term benefit will be more clearance when I wear these Duratracs out and get a bigger set next time. Plus - I've got no problem standing 1" taller.

Anyways, that's where I'm at. Let the waiting begin again...

Lookin' good! When the time come to replace the suspension, i'll be going OME as well. I am torn between OME 880/906 (1 1/2" & 2") and OME 881/890 (2.5" & 3"). I also have brand new LT265/75/16s tires which i'll be sticking with, so it's nice to see what it would look with the other option. Your 4Runner is clean and you're off to a great start. Keep it up!

Just my luck, it started snowing yesterday just before Fedex dropped off the wheel spacers and body lift. Not the end of the world though, I went ahead and installed the wheel spacers then put the body lift on today. Couldn't be happier with the results.

Working by myself in the cold today, it took me about 6.5 hours to install the body lift. I didn't order relocation brackets for the front bumper. Here's how I modified the brackets to raise it up. I raised the lower hole and made a small notch in the top so that the upper stud would clear the bracket without bending it. I wasn't worried so much about keeping the mod reversible, but I figure I'll want to sell the bumper someday, so might as well keep it stock.

Hey man so how are you liking the lift after driving with it for a few months? I'm looking at getting the exact same combo as you, except for maybe the rear shocks. Does your rear of the truck feel stiff with the OME 890/60028 shocks? I've heard with that setup it's really stiff for a daily driver, like when you go over speed bumps it launches everything that's in the back. Just wondering if this is true for you what I read in an OME review thread by rickashay. http://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-gen-t4rs/101758-rickashay-s-ome-vs-trd-tundra-lc-review.html

"Onroad Manners: The OME setup was definitely stiffer, as you all know, than the stock suspension. I dont have the spring ratings (SCRunner said he was going to put them into the LIFT FAQ??) but I can tell you that it is rough driving around town everyday. After the novelty of "having new suspension" wore off, I realized infact how harsh the OME setup was on my DD 4Runner. I thought I would get used to it, but I never did. Unloaded the rear of the truck would almost jump or hop when going over large bumps. It was definitely meant to have weight in it all the time."

Not sure if the novelty of "having new suspension" has worn off of you yet, but let me know what you think!! I'm trying to get my suspension right the first time, and getting all the opinions from everybody. Also, did toytec recommend you get a diff drop? I hear with the 881's you don't need a diff drop, so just wondering why you ordered one?

The rear is definitely pretty rigid, and things do vibrate in the back with sh*tty roads. Loaded its awesome. Its not too much to bare for me, so im content with it, this is with the 60028 shocks.

To answer your question I had that exact setup on my 2002. The rear was horribly stiff. It definitely does not match up with the front. Off road it was pretty good but over speed bumps I got luanched out f my seat. Drove like a buckboard.

Cool thanks guys for letting me know, I will definitely be going with another shock besides the 60028 in the rear then. My runner is my daily driver and I do not want a harsh ride that the ome 890/60028 give, so hopefully putting a different set of shocks back there will soften the ride. I see a lot of people that get the toytec ultimate lift choose for the rear the ome 890's paired with the bilstein 5125 shock and they say the ride isn't bad. My only worry with the 5125's is the adapter I have to use to mount them at the top, heard it could cause some clunking. So I'll go with ome 881/90004 for the front, then ome 890 w/ bilstein 5125 for the rear. That sound like a good lift to you guys for 2.5"?

Sorry Ben for cluttering your build thread! Just wanted to hear what you thought about the rear end of your lift, and I think I got my answer. I'd still like to hear what you say about the rear end though. Anyway awesome looking runner so far! Like what you did with the sliders and color matching the flares. Only thing I would say is to do the "mud flap mod" and trim those black rubber extensions on your rear mud guards to give your truck a higher looking stance from the back. Woah- Just saw all the commotion here. I've got to disagree with everyone about the 60028's. I love the way this setup rides. It's way smoother than the stock stuff I had with ~175k miles on it. I keep a fair amount of loose stuff (tools, boots, hard hat, etc) in the back and it doesn't go anywhere when I hit bumps or go over speed bumps. This is also my daily driver and I like the ride on and off road. I made an 11 hour round trip last weekend and would gladly do it again in the 4Runner (as long as someone else paid for the gas).

Just my personal experience though. I haven't tried out any of the other options out there so maybe I just don't know better- but I have no complaints at all with what I've got.

Good luck shopping - and thanks for linking that mod. Just might have to do it. :thumb:

I've just been enjoying the 4Runner and keeping up on maintenance for the last while with nothing much to report. I moved to Hickory from Raleigh and don't have a garage anymore... for now. I've been collecting some things to add to the 4R tho and figured it was time for an update.

Most importantly I picked up a used 2nd gen supercharger this past weekend. Its in the mail now and will be here Wednesday! I can't wait. I had one of these on my 98 Tacoma years ago and loved it. More on the s/c once its here and things progress. Thread I started about the SC

I also picked up the 0.75" toytech top plate spacers to add to my lift. Its easy to say now that I should have done them from the get go, but live and learn. They'll lift the front up a hair while still maintaining some of the rake. I also have new OEM lower ball joints and outer tie rod ends to put on while I've got the front taken apart. I figure I'll finally install the new steering rack bushings at that point too. All of that should make for a nice front end make over.

Anyhow... I'll keep this updated as all of this plays out.
