Besides Craig's where else to find a nice Gen 3?

Hey guys, I'm in the market for a solid Gen 3 as a dedicated off-road vehicle (nothing crazy, just a solid all-weather trail driver)and was just curious besides Craigslist (or ebay) I might find somewhat local listings. I went and checked out a couple I saw on Craig's but both guys seemed sketchy like they were selling for someone else or something. Was hoping there was another good source I just haven't thought of. Thanks.

Cars.com but they are usually dealers. Autotrader. Searchtempest.com will let you browse all of the above in one convenient spot.

carguru.com is a good search that will show the local dealer inventories as well as some private listings. Can expand your search radius and preferences too. It also emails you, (if you want it too) to tell you if a 4runner,. or whatever car you're searching for gets posted. I bought a minty 02 from a local dealer a few months ago using carguru. November I bought a 98 in Arkansas from craigslist which was an old forum members ride. Bought the last 4 4runners off Craigslist before that though.. Good luck!

My buddy just got a great deal on one from a towing auction. It had a flat tire so it was towed and I guess no one bothered to pick it up. It's a 98 SR5 with 140k miles. Pretty clean and runs great. He got it for $2400 I think? It's worth looking into auctions if you have any around you.

I got mine on craigslist though. It was the original owner and super clean. The guy never sold a car privately before so he posted it for blue book value! The 4runner around here are close to double blue book. I picked it up that same day.

A decent one will pop up. You have have to keep looking and have cash ready. If it's a really good deal you pretty much have to snag it right away or it will be gone. I was already test driving mine less than an hour after the guy posted it.

I bought mine from a used car lot, but found it listed on CL. You can check out the local lots, but most will have their cars listed on the web somewhere.

You could also look at the classified on this forum, but it seams to me everyone on here is asking WAY too much. I used Auto Trader a lot when I was looking, saw a lot of the same vehicles on CL. Lots of shaky people out there unfortunately, and they are everywhere online. You could post your own WTB ad on CL prequalifying the seller, could work....prolly not.

I looked everywhere i could think of and had no luck. Eventually i gave up and just went out for a drive down the road here that has a ton of small lots. At that point i was just looking for anything i could use as a daily driver. Lo and behold, I found my gem at a little shithole lot with an owner who was actually pretty cool.

My lesson from this experience: for vehicles this old, you can find some at the lots in the tote-the-note (aka buy here, pay here) neighborhood, if you find a lot that DOESN'T finance. The ones that do are often selling thrice-repoed, beat-to-hell vehicles at stupid prices. The ones that don't finance are more likely to be of the old business model: find a good truck at auction, sell it at a profit.

Anyway, that was my experience. If you're not having luck, you can try looking under that rock.

This is what I've been using for my search recently. States

Craigslist, forum classified, etc. seem like good places to start. If you see something you like, at least this goes for the NorthWest, check it out ASAP. I've seen a few that caught my eye, which had only been posted within the hour, and i'll check back a few minutes later and the posting will be deleted and forever lost. Best of luck on your search!
