Best All Terrain tire Choice ( For 2wd )

High everyone i have to say that i am tired of my crappy stock street tires and getting stuck with them i have a 2wd and i want to be able to off road without having to worry if i am going to get stuck. I am sure someone has gone over this topic before but i would really appreciate if I could be pointed to the best tires for my situation.

So just please drop a post and argument why you think your choice of tire is best.:awais:

Well tires will only get you so far. There is no substitute for 4X4 and you will still be limited to very mild terrain with 2WD.

My recommendations for AT tires are Nitto Terra Grapplers and BFG AT KO. You can go to a 265/70/17 on a stock 4Runner, or larger with a lift.

You want either a P, C or D rated tire. An E rated tire will give you a really harsh ride. For your needs, a P rated tire will be the most comfortable, and it will be suitable for your needs.

You'd be surprised what some of the 2WD vehicles can do. Get a locker in that rear and you will be able to get your rig to a lot of places. You will need more skills than a 4WD driver, though.

For tires, you never mentioned what kind of terrain you 'll be in. Generally speaking, get REVO's or KO's. KO's if you're going to be more for off-road, REVO's if you're going to be mostly on-road.

Im thinking that i like the revos but there so pricey.

I got to highschool so im driving on the road a lot but i do go and drive around on my freinds land he has trails designs toward dirtbikes and 4wheelers and on little spot were we turn of the traction control and do donuts on loose dirt.

I would like to do some actually riding through slight mud and wet mushy terrain as there is a lot of that where I live.

P is for Passenger
C, D, and E is the thickness rating. D and E's are made for the heavy loads on heavy trucks like 3/4 ton trucks and 1- ton trucks.
My Terra Grapplers are load range D. More than adequate for the load. It is a heavier tire and bigger. 265/75/16 vs 265/70/16 stock. The ride is a little harsher, but not much. I sure like the beefiness over the wimpy stock Bridgestones I had.

I am also for NTG's.

Great tire for the price, I got mine and had them mounted for $500 out the door (not including a spare). With that price, it is hard to justify BFG AT KO's (which are the other tire I recommend).

Can anyone comment on how well the Nittos wear? I have had several pairs of BFG A/Ts and they last a long time, but only if you rotate them religiously. Otherwise they wear very uneven very fast. And they suck in the rain when they get worn.

I see that they make the NTGs in a 265/65/R17 now. Would that look better than a 265/70/R17 on a stock 2wd? Do the 70s rub on a stock 2wd?

get a locker for the rear if your gonna offroad. nothing can replace that! by the way, ive got (e) load tires on mine , yes they are slightly heavier but ride great, not harsh at all. it depends on the brand you get. then again, to me, only a very aggressive MT might be harsh on the road,... if your doing offroad, who thinks about harsh riding tires? if you want best bang for the buck, the nittos will do ya fine. the D range (side wall strength) holds up well in the rough.

if the P range rides the best, is it the cheapest only because it is for lighter use
and i am also interested in how long they last

I know this is an old thread but what do y'all think about the Goodyear Wrangler DuraTracs? I live in Idaho the Panhandle and we get all 4 seasons in one day sometimes. I venture out on the forest services roads and those can vary from smooth dirt to rocky terrain. I'm running a stock '99 RWD with Bilstiens 4600.

BFG KO2s on mine have been great so far, about 5000 miles on them. Friend of mine has Michelin defenders on his that he's very happy with if you want a more stock look.

I thought Goodyear discontinued the DuraTracs? I stay away from tires that’ll be hard to get imo

Well I can find then on Tirerack.com, maybe they have been d/c and just running through the overstock.
