Best Handgun for Concealed Carry

no gun will be right for eveyone I'v gone through a few, mostly just to get something new, if i was bigger I would probably carry my g26 but its thick and pretty heavy, so lately I have carried a j frame revolver (ruger LCR)
most importantly for me, be comfortable to carry the gun chambered, possibly without a safety. unless you do ALOT of training to remove the safety when needed. no you will not have time to chamber a round when you need it. and I have missed birds during a hunt because i forgot safety was on.

Don’t have a CCW, but in my part of Nevada open carry is legal. I havea standard Ruger Security-9 with a Hogue grip and several 15-round mags plus the two 10-round mags the gun came with. A bit large for CC, but Ruger’s website shows a new compact Security-9. Love this gun. Shoots comfortably in either hand (I’m ambidextrous). The county has a very nice free shooting range up by the dump and I enjoy spending mornings practicing with this and my other firearms.

Newest serious contender in the sub-compact 9mm market was announced the other day; the Springfield Armory Hellcat.
The P365 by Sig has been the gun de jour for the size/capacity wars, but the Hellcat beats it by one more round for less cost.
If it manages to avoid the reliability issues that continue to plague the P365, then it will be the hottest new carry pistol.

I have the Glock 29, which is the subcompact version of the 20 (10mm). It's kind of chunky for a "subcompact" but it packs a punch. It also takes the full sized Glock 20 magazines if you want it to, so you can run 15+1. I use the full sized magazines when I go hiking. If I conceal carry somewhere around people, I use the smaller, 10 round magazines. It's loud and it kicks, but I bought it with black bears and cougars in mind! (bear spray first, though...unless it's windy)

I have a few that change with the season. In the winter it's typically a Glock 19, while in the summer it's usually a Ruger LCR. I use Remora IWB holsters for both and really like them.
The LC9 is also a good option with a really good trigger.

I encourage this idea... More deals to be had for me.
Majority of my guns - handguns, rifles, and shotguns were bought used. Lots of folks buy a handgun, shoot it for a bit, and trade it on something else.
Lately, I've been pocket carrying a Ruger LC9S Pro. Disappears in the pocket. It's a dime a dozen low $ gun that is reliable and accurate.
I like Glocks and will rotate in a Polymer 80 SC (G26) or my Glock 19. Neither of which disappear like the Ruger.
That Polymer 80 sub-compact is sweet. I still have to build my compact version.
I don't see how you can pocket carry an LC9 comfortably. I carry an LCP frequently and I can still feel it moving around and it's damn near half the weight. I have tried to pocket carry my PM9 but it's too heavy. I wear loose pants/shorts so maybe that is part of the difference. I have bought so many small guns is sickening to add up all of the cost.

If one is going to holster carry I would say the P365 is at the front of the pack when you factor in the capacity.
I find the LC9 works for pocket carry in Cargo Shorts or Vertx Cargo Pants. Can't carry that one in Jeans.
I recently picked up a Sig P365 and pocket carried it in public for 2 days at an off road event. A little too heavy for pocket carry and I switched it over to belt holster for the 3rd and 4th day.
Find the LC9 with a spare mag in the same pocket looks a bit like a cell phone and doesn't print too badly. Would be a slow reload but not horrible. I also have a LCP for days I'm worried about printing. It runs reliably, but for me - it's a point blank shooting gun. I'm not very accurate with it past a few yards.
I can hit my backyard steel gong at 25yds with both the LC9, P365, and my Glocks. Latest purchase:
Comparison of my new Sig to my Ruger. The Sig is a little shorter in height and length. Just slightly chunkier in the grip.
Doesn't everyone have a range in their backyard?

Is that the LC9 on the right? Looks pretty big to me. I wear VERTX Phantom pants all week and they are a little baggy so any pocket pistol tends to sway when I walk. Printing with the LCP is not too baggy but I would not say it is 100% reliable like my G43. I have not shot the P365 much but I have not had any issues. It was made in September of 2018 I believe. Hopefully all of the teething issues were before that.
Man, I'm jealous. I hate shooting paper at the range. So boring. I have plenty of toys but spent the money on them instead of land. I had a decent chunk of change saved up for 30 acres or so but the prices went crazy around 2016.
Ruger is on the right above. I'm 6'4 220# so my pockets may be bigger than yours.
I was pocket carrying my LCP in Carhart Jeans last night at a party. Mine came with a pocket holster from Ruger. With a spare mag in the same pocket it looks pretty square cell phone-ish to me.
I need a couple of these wallet holsters. The flap is worn facing out creating a wallet look to it in your pocket:

My only tiny pet peeve on the Sig P365 is the coarseness of the grip. Wearing it in a belt holster under a T-Shirt it's rough on my skin. They really stippled the hell out of the grip. It is heavier than the Ruger and after a day carrying it, I switch it out for my LCP.

I have seen the wallet shaped ones that have cutouts for finger but that semi-exposes the trigger. The one you linked avoids that problem but are a bit expensive. I usually buy Desantis Nemesis pocket holsters but they print somewhat obviously. I don't carry IWB that much these days but do prefer my G43 over the P365. If you think about how rare it is to get into a gunfight in a decent part of town, the capacity argument is overblown.

Won't really get into caliber because everyone has a different opinion and comfort level. Most important thing is to try the available options to see what works for your hands and train regularly, simulating real life situations and understand practicality vs perception (hype). That may dictate what you end up with vs what you originally choose.
If you plan on sticking to the CA rostered stuff for EDC,
the gen3 G26/27 or G19 as they're cheap and easily replaceable with parts readily available. Same goes with M&P Shield. G42/43 is probably too small but better than nothing. That's assuming any fit your hands because the aforementioned are not the best ergonomically.
I don't remember what else is left on the roster that are worth mentioning for EDC since CC wasn't an option when I was still in SD. Being in a mostly free state, we have the HK SKs such as the VP9SK as options here and, if you have the chance, would recommend giving those a try as it it's the same size as the G19 but superior ergonomically. Although I have always trained with Glocks, the HK is a better feel and is my primary now. Only downside I can think of is the premium it'll cost to obtain one in CA. Have also heard good things about the Sig P365 but no experience with it. I just know FTF issues plagued our other SIG and I would have a hard time trusting another SIG at this point.
OP, if I were still in CA pondering your situation, it would be a Glock due to the practical reasons (and it fits my hands). The Glock products are pretty consistent in feel across each model (trigger, ergonomics, operation) so if you choose to train on the platform, there's not much of an adjustment when moving from one model to another if you own multiple Glocks. You don't have much to think about in stress situations, just point and shoot. It's kind of like a 4Runner, reliable, easy to operate and maintain and plenty of support for it OEM or aftermarket.

to anyone buying a CA shield:
get the LCI delete kit, and eliminate the no magazine/no fire issue (i believe you mod a 1911 spring, google it).
the LCIs on the CA sheilds obstruct the view on your sights and make it very hard to see what you are aiming at and makes it dangerous (california has a history of making firearms more 'safe', but it is far more dangerous to the end user, see also fin grips).
the mag safety is just as dumb as the LCI obtrusion. if you drop your mag in a super stressful situation, but you have one in the pipe, your firearm is now a glorified paperweight until you get that mag in.
g42 and g43 are not on the roster. there isnt a singlestack glock on the roster. they were released after the single shot loophole closed.

OP, other than a few sigs and CZs on the roster there isnt a semi auto on the roster i would trust my life with other than a glock. dan wessons and wilsons are fine, but just too much money. 5.7 is too oddball of a caliber and you technically arent allowed to carry with the capacity it was intended with (one of the huge pluses with 5.7). kahrs and the cheap rugers are crap. every brand new kimber ive shot out of the box was too tight and had issues with feeding the next round. the grip safeties on the springfields are terrible as once it goes down the firearm is now a paperweight. the shield is a great starter pistol if you can draw a sub compact single stack with ease and do the mods i recommend. i also recommend the hyve basepads, they give you more real estate for your pinky/ring finger.
im sure someone will disagree with me, but ive handled a lot of pistols in my life and i used to work at a shop/range where i was able to tell customers how i really felt about stuff.

They were released after SSE loophole closed but are still legal to own in CA via other methods of acquisition. Whether it can be listed as one of your CCW pieces is up to your IA. I legally bought and sold both the G42 and G43 and many other off-roster items before leaving CA. Just don't be surprised to see asking prices at 2x what they're actually worth (compared to buying in a free state). The roster is a joke.

I moved from CA 1½ years ago.
I had my CCW there. I carried either a full-size Beretta PX4 9mm or Ruger SP101 357mag.
Here in AZ (and abroad) I carry the same two.
