Best motor for motor swap?

You know you already have one of the most reliable engines Toyota ever designed, right? The 5VZ-FE is what you swap into other trucks, not take out of your own!

If you are simply looking for more power, a supercharger would be a MUCH easier and cost-effective option. Unless of course, you are wanting to swap just for the challenge or to learn how to.

I'm sorry maybe you didn't read all the way. This is ideas for motors when my 3.4 dies. I'm not getting rid of it anyyyyy time soon.

1kz-te aka the 3.0 turbo diesel from the surf.

Lots goes into going diesel. I have researched a little into it and WOW what a job! Getting a full engine is not too bad however swapping to a diesel tank and redoing all the fuel lines as well as the wiring will be quite a challenge.

Going from low 20s to low 40s for mpg....priceless. That might be optimistic for mpg but still even the 30s would be awesome.

Really? That'd definitely be worth the work.

I'm gonna keep my options open to do a complete 3.0 turbo diesel swap eventually. Just gotta get a half cut shipped somehow within a budget. Not hard to do if you have the other complete vehicle. I have a connection in Australia to get stuff shipped in containers.

On a side note I think you should try to drive a vehicle with the 1KZ before thinking it's the best thing since sliced bread. I drove one and I thought it was sluggish. A chip might help it, but with the cost of the swap as well as the price difference of diesel fuel, you are not saving money anytime soon. Low 40 MPG's? It is not the most efficient diesel they made, and it sure as hell isn't turning your 4000lb 4Runner into a BOF Prius competitor.

I think swapping in the revised 4.0 V6 with the oil filter placed next to the oil cap would be a good swap.

While the Diesel is more fuel efficient than the 5VZ-FE, it's not going to get 40 mpg in a 4Runner.

I'm a diesel fan to begin with. It's the cool factor also. If money was no option and I didn't have 5 other hobbies Id really try and do the diesel swap eventually. I have almost nothing into my 97 so it would be worth it.

I have driven quite a few while I was stationed in mainland Japan and while they were more sluggish than my 5 spd they were not much more sluggish than the auto slush box with the 5vz.

Economy won't hit the 40s with an armored 4wd but you will be in the 30s.

You could also try for the 1kd-ftv which is the updated and more efficient engine. However there is a complication with the ecu. If it is disconnected from a power source for more than 24 hrs the whole ecu locks down and is very expensive to unlock. The guys at toyota swaps could help you with the details....if they want.

That would be a nifty swap I loved the one in my FJ its got a good bit more pep. I wonder how hard the swap would be if you had the harness and computer?hmmmmmmmmop2:

I plan on getting a Lamborghini Countach to add to my car collection too.....eventually. Think I should start a thread about it NOW though? Maybe I should ask tons of questions for something I will most likely never do or have the ability to? Seriously, these threads seem to be coming in constantly.

No, I read it right. You can get used 3.4's on the cheap from Japan, sometimes for under $1500 with less than 100k miles. If you want more power just add a supercharger to it. Much, much easier than fabricating custom motor mounts, exhaust and wiring harnesses for another type of engine IMO. But it's your truck and not mine, so it's totally up to you.
