Best speculation of a 2023 6th generation I have seen

Question for Toyota/Lexus: Why do you never allow your customers to choose the most luxurious interior and pair it with the most off-road worthy suspension and drive train?

I think it uiltimately comes down to volume manufacturing versus how vehicles are most likely to be desirably equipped for customers. Manufacturers have generally gone more heavily towards trim lines than individualized options in the last 5 to 10 years I'd say, especially for mainstream vehicles. This is also why you see so many damn white, black and silver cars, since most people are perfectly happy driving them and they are vanilla.

As it is with Toyota (I don't know about Lexus), in general you cannot really order a specific vehicle that you want but are rather at the mercy of dealer allocation and vehicles out there ultimately matching what you find desirable in a trim. I know when I got my 2020 TRD Pro, I basically put my name on a list immediately when the army green color was announced in May 2019 and was able to snag the first of several 2020 allocations in November 2019 for my dealer of choice.

That is one thing I have enjoyed about both my Land Rover and previously my Audi TT-S which were custom orders. We literally were able to get the vehicle with EVERYTHING we wanted and NOTHING we didn't. I'd much rather wait 4 to 6 months for the perfect vehicle than wait 4 to 6 months to see if I get lucky that a dealer(s) can locate what I want coming in via their allocation.

I'm actually thinking about the 2.4 turbo hybrid, we'll see what the torque is.

a bit over 400

I actually want the 18" wheels

The only reason a dealer wouldn't make that happen for you (perhaps with some cost) would be they are selling so fast they can't get them on the lot.

Same with my Touareg. I was actually able to get my 4Runner this way back in 17 but I did have to wait for it. I won't allow major options I don't want (i.e. sunroof). I just won't buy the vehicle unless its exactly what I want.

That would work. I guess at this point we just have to see what the size of the Prado and the 4Runner are going to be. I would like it a little bit smaller than the GX but I would buy the GX premium with the hybrid.

And the styling, but I do like the new GX pretty well.

What of the 3rd row seats? Is there a consensus on that?

Here is an update to my running summary, a big thanks to Carmaker1 for sharing much of the background information.

2024 Toyota Land Cruiser (GX & Retro FJ influenced, for USA & Canada)
First Tease 7/6/2023
Reveal: Fall 2023 (expect a 6-8 week teaser campaign ahead of the date)
Launch: Spring 2024
Engines: Alleged TTV6 or i-Force MAX 2.4T
Closest Rendering
"The Legend Returns" Confirmed by Toyota 6-13-2023

2025 Toyota 6th gen 4Runner (Tacoma influenced)
Reveal: Winter/Spring 2024 (expect a 6-8 week teaser campaign ahead of the date)
Launch: Summer/Fall 2024
Engines: 2.4L turbo I-4, i-Force MAX 2.4L turbo I-4 hybrid, alleged PHEV, No TTV6
Closest Rendering: CarBuzz, insiders say the CarBuzz rendering is the closest so far but a) needs to be more angular, like the new Tacoma. b) The Tacoma headlight design is extremely similar, but 4Runner has a different curvature than the Tacoma units. c) The C-Pillar is more upright for better ease of entry and a slopped D-Pillar.
AutoEvolution published a new rendering that is interesting, blending in more of the Tacoma styling and getting some of the above mention items closer but one thing to note they are taking some design cues from the Tundra grill, with its vertical sides, where the Tacoma grill sides slants inwards.

Fully agree. I see you are out in Mesa. Reminds me of how I acquired a 2000 Tundra when they first came out. Someone gave me the name of the fleet manager at Camelback Toyota. He said they were such a high volume dealer that he could likely get me a Tundra outfitted the way I wanted. He came through. He was able to "suggest" to the factory a Tundra with every option I wanted and none I didn't. A few months later, I flew out, picked it up and drove it back to Texas. Of course, that truck was made in the U.S. and there wasn't 6 trim lines on the Tundra at that time, so all that might have made their task easier.

Yeah, I've worked with a great internet sales manager at Avondale Toyota in the west Valley for my 2 4Runners. He's indicated that a Toyota custom order is not really a possible thing but that you basically can wait for one to be built the way you want and then they can hopefully grab it as part of their allocation (and this seems to jive with the word from others in this forum). He's already keeping an eye on timing for their initial Grand Highlanders for me so I can take a look at a Hybridmax one once they get one (his guess was maybe August).

I'm curious about the Lexus experience with ordering and vehicle allocations though.

I know from Land Rover they basically get a certain amount of allotments for vehicles every 4 to 6 weeks when they basically batch orders. The dealer will utilize their spots for customer special orders or alternatively just grab vehicles outfitted to appeal to mainstream market. A funny thing with them is that so much is optional on the vehicles that he was telling me a story about a bunch of $90K Range Rovers that came in without blindspot monitoring and some other basic safety systems since someone forgot to check the driver assist package in the orders... oops! :).

Well since the next 4 runner and the tacoma will get this exact powertrain i think that it’s a failure. The GX should have a more upscale powertrain.

So do we know for sure that the hybrid version will be the 4banger and not the 6?
That is very disappointing if so.
I've given up on a truck but really want a rear window that drops like the 4R or at least raises for a quick run to big orange on occasion. So I'm back to looking at a GX.

It's very odd that you can only get the Levinson audio package on the Luxury but that drops your tow capabilities by 1000lbs.

I'm very curious if the new GX is substantially more plush in ride than the current platform.

Has anyone seen the third row configuration both up and down?

Some of the documentation from Toyota/Lexus clearly states there will be 2.4L Inline 4 cylinder hybrid option. But, they don't state whether or not that engine will be coming to the US and whether or not they will eventually offer other hybrid options. Most of the documentation I've seen regarding the 2.4 hybrid was contained in global documents. The official US documentation usually just mentions a hybrid is coming. Here is one link (scroll to the specs box at the bottom of the article): World Premiere of the All-New Lexus GX | Lexus | Global Newsroom | Toyota Motor Corporation Official Global Website

Not sure why the Luxury has a lower tow rating. Maybe a softer suspension or possibly the 22" wheel/tire combo has a much lower load rating. It's strange that the Luxury+ comes with an even lower tow rating and the only discernible difference from the Luxury is that it comes with "Adaptive Variable Suspension" as does the Overtrail. Hmmm.

With no 22" sidewall flex perhaps they used softer springs to avoid complaints about "why does my wagon wheel ride feel so rough?"

Thanks Gents. Honestly the PremiumPlus would be the one I would look at if I could get the Levinson soundsystem in it.
If not that, might as well get the LuxPlus and get the better suspension.

Oof. Also found an image that shows the hybrid set up with the battery pack sitting up high in the back so it will take up interior space. That rules it out IMO.
I dont know how to upload an image here.

I wonder if they drop the third row in the hybrid. Why would you waste the money in two completely different third row set ups if you're Lexus?

I'm curious what the Disco Hybrid looks like on the inside. It doesn't appear to compromise interior space (it's unibody, i get it). It's only a little more money, uses a V6, and if it doesn't impact the interior space, seems like a better option to me except the rear window doesn't raise separate from the tail gate.

Except you will need a boatload of money to keep a Disco running thanks to their poor reliability.

I think if you want a GX hybrid just buy it and buy some softside type luggage and bag styles. It looks like you're only loosing a couple of small suitcases of room, not a deal-breaker.

I thought reliability had improved with the newer LRs.
I suspect the GX is too heavy for the 4cylinder hybrid in the mountains. I'd just get the turbo 6 and deal with crap MPG until my next car. I would hope that the solid state batteries are in mass production 10 years from now.

I've not heard about improved reliability, you would have to check owners experiences via Google.

I've read several current owners statements they will get rid of them when the 4 year warranty expires out of fear of the cost.

1 year time frame search.
