Not sure why people keep suggesting such wild ideas, Toyota is a very conservative company.
I am going to bet it is going to be basically a Tacoma with any enclosed top and with all the same engines, 2.4T at the lower trims and 2.4T hybrid at the higher trims. SR5 will have the 2.4T so can offer a 3rd row. Production will move to Mexico(and maybe Texas) like the Tacoma to help keep costs contained so it can probably start in the mid-40s to undercut the LC250. A nice surprise would be to offer the 6MT 2.4T from the Tacoma in the new 4r.
...
I still think the Land Cruiser should have offered an off-road package with 35" tires, steel bumpers, and a front locking differential. I can live with the 2.4T as the only option if it gets 27mpg.
My 100% guess...the new 4runner will be a "re-badged" LC with:
1. Part-time 4wd.
2. More basic styling...but same size.
3. Less luxury...less sound deadening, less features, thinner glass, thinner sheetmetal...but same underneath.
4. Same powertrain.
5. Cloth and Nuluxe...no leather option.
6. "TRD PRO" will have front disconnect and rear locker of course.
7. Non-TRD PRO will have optional rear locker.
8. 3rd row will be optional...you can see that LC rear cargo floor is high for no damn good reason...probably preparing some 4runner models to have 3rd row?
9. Maybe now made in USA to cut costs?
10. Probably price range $45k to $55k.
11. Tow rating 6000 lbs.
I think all this is very plausible and in many ways I hope most of it is true. Personally I'd like for the 4R to have a non-hybrid option in a base SR5 trim. Hopefully you can get that in a 2 row configuration that way you have more cargo space and theoretically more payload without the batteries and without the 3rd row. My ideal package and trim would be a 4R non-hybrid, SR5 with the TRD-OR package in a 2-row config. I dare say that sounds more appealing than the LC250 1958 for a utilitarian rig.
Personally, COTH interior is not what I want in an off-roader. Mud, stains, dirt are pain in the rear end to clean. Give my Nuluxe any day of the week!!
Both seats are now a cool "thing"....with Nuluxe, there is no reason to use cloth.
Kirk Kreifels is out with a new video and rendering. He spoke with Toyota reps at the Land Cruiser reveal who confirmed, as we know, the 4Runner is not dead.
For his rendering, he started from the Tacoma so the rear wheel wells seem a little oversized, he discusses it about the 9 minute mark.

Kirk discusses overlap, pricing and features in the video. For sure I like nice esthetics. And that rendering looks so good that I just don't think we get it. Clearly I'm having a problem with figuring the positioning of the 4Runner. Something that looks that nice and with the Hybrid and at a lower price point, why do I buy the LandCruiser?
There has to be something else in how they differentiate that I am not anticipating.
You have to give me a reason to go to the Landcruiser or the GX over the 4Runner.

I think the side view is nice, the rear view a bit mini van like. The front view, I don’t mind the retro lights. It gives it more style. Not a fan of the grille something looks off to me. The interior is okay, lots of buttons which I get. I do agree about the use of too much plastic for a 60K vehicle. The interior could change though when it gets closer to production no?
Curious to see the 4 runner more now. Also, looks like Toyota getting rid of the roll up rear windows which is sad.
