Best tires on snow/ice AT (Revo/KO/Yoko?)

I just traded my Tacoma for an 05 4Runner which currently has Bridgestone Revo's. It has 38,000 on it and the Revo's are looking worn (don't know when they were put on). I had BFG KO's on my Tacoma but they tended to slip in the rain. I know 4Runners have the weight in back to maybe solve this but I need something on/off road (light off road) that can stand up to AK weather which is where I'm moving in September. I'm driving from Seattle to Anchorage so I have a couple of questions.

Can moderately worn Revo's hold up to Canadian gravel sections and possible light snow for the long sections with no tire stores?
Should I have them changed first and if yes what to?
The KO's don't come in my size 265/65/17 so I was looking at Revo's but LOTS of mixed reviews.
Also looking at the Yokohama Geolander, Firestone Destination, or Michelin LTX A/T2 but not enough snow/ice reviews.

Anybody with snow & ice experience that can recommend? I would prefer to get them in AK so it's a local store but if the traction won't be good...

Lot of people go with 265/70/17's with no issues. Many are enjoying the Goodyears Silent Armors these days. 265/70's open up lots of options, the biggest drawback is you should get a 265/70 spare also...

I have looked into the Goodyear Silent Armor but heard some rather (not so good) firm opinions on Goodyear tires in general. Maybe they've gotten better?

I was turned down for a size change due to the 70's "possibly not working" with the pressure sensor in the wheels by a company I was looking into the BFG KO's with, and they were concerned about rubbing. I could always order online & mount them myself but I'd rather buy at a store.

Forgot to mention I have about an 1/8" left on the tread all 4 tires. The trip is around 2500 miles, probably fine to wait to AK but I've never had Revo's to know how good they are & would love to avoid flats.

Would also like a tire that doesn't lower my mpg's and would still be a quieter ride.

Sensors will work fine. It sounds like you want GY SA's. Many have had great luck with Revos. I have had them and loved them. People from the snow climate say they work very well in some types of snow and average in others. Search the username Falls and if the title has anything to do with tires read it. He has given some awesome Revo feedback.

Also read sticky in this section about the mountain snowflake.

I am with you on the Goodyear thing... It seems as though they have a real winner in the SA's though.

I will check out Falls Revo opinions & the Goodyear SA's.

I'm don't have a firm opinion on any particular brand except I didn't like the slippage in the rain with my KO's & expect that may be a sign of their traction in snow & on ice. Maybe the Goodyear SA's will be my next tire. Never know.

Check out the Pirelli Scorpion ATR you will not be disapointed and/or Pirelli snow and ICE. worth the price. I know hard spot. big frickin' deal.

I looked at Pirelli ATR's but wasn't coming up with enough good info. on their snow/ice performance. The winter tire got good reviews but the ATR did not so I decided to steer away from them.
If you've had them in AK how long & compared to what other tires (you've had)? I figure if you're from AK you have to be a pretty good source.

I have to admit I may be leaning towards the Goodyear SA's after looking into them. The one thing I've noticed is I can't find firm info. on GY SA's and if they lower your mpg's. I have seen info. from yes they do to no they don't. One review said they lowered mileage by almost 3mpg's. Not good considering gas prices.
 
Hmmm...maybe I need to look a bit more. The Perelli's do rate #1 on Tire Rack but I just couldn't find enough reviews on them.
Gotta say, your pictures make me drool. Can't wait to get to AK & will be there in perfect time to see all the snow. I love driving in that kind of stuff. Just want tires that will let me do it safely. Don't want to damage the 4Runner right (lol) I love this vehicle even over my Tacoma which I didn't think was possible.

I think that any of the top rated tires will do well. what you have to realize is that, depending on your location, you will be driving on packed ice for several months and a studded tire is the best way to go in many driver's opinions. However, for the slush and snow, I found the Pirelli to be competent. The Goodyear have gotten very good reviews here and other places. If you are going with a dedicated winter tire then many swear by Blizzak. Tires that perform well in snow, can have a hard time in ice that is why people choose a studded or studdable tire. Good luck in your search. Perhaps some of the AK current residents will chime in and offer a retailer in the area where you are going.
 
I think that if you are living up in the Great White North, you ought to stick with a severe weather rated tire - the Mountan & Snowflake.

I read that sticky when I was looking for tires last year for my '07 T4R. I ended up purchasing the Good Year Wrangler Silent Armors.

I was a bit leary of these since I heard probably much of the same rumblings about Good Years as you have. However, I put them on the truck and I can say that I am very satisfied with them. We had a pretty strong winter in New England last year and these tires were quite good. Rarely any slipping despite my best efforts at times - even on highways with worn ice ruts between snow plows. They have been great in the rain as well, considering how poorly the roads drain around here.

Relatively new tires in general, but I think you would be happy with them. I have not noticed a huge drop in mileage with them, but they are a more aggressive tire than the Revos and I expected it. I think I lost about 1 MPG with them, but I do not drive like a mad man.

I started looking for the Goodyear Silent Armor's and no one has them in 265/65/17 where I am. I'm not in Seattle yet but I'll have 3 days to find & get them if I wait. Since I was trying to find a company that's in Anchorage as well it leaves me with Costco & Sears.
Costco carries the Michellin LTX A/T2 however no one has mentioned these. I found a thread on this site that was complimentary & they are listed above Revo's but below GY SA's on Tire Rack.
Any opinions on the Michellin LTX?
 
Well, I have to say, after checking reviews on the Michelin LTX A/T2's I finally realized something...I am SOOOOO sick of looking at tire reviews I can hardly stand it.

I really appreciate the feedback & unless someone can tell me why Michelin's are far superior I think I'm going to order the Goodyear Silent Armor's through a Seattle store so I can pick them up when I get there. Thanks to CJ3Flyr for recommending them because I never would have considered them otherwise.

I do intend to keep my ear to the ground on the Pirelli ATR (thanks Alaskaman) I just haven't seen enough on them to feel comfortable.

Just want to ad what a great site this is! Thanks for all your help!

I have been able to get around in snow that is 10-12 inches deep with the revo's and didn't really have a problem. I haven't tried the gy sa in the snow yet but they perform nicely in the rain when I had them on my truck for the summer drive to California.

Check these out. Probably the best overall AT tire for your needs. Lot of informative posts, including someone who drove nokians thru some rugged terrain
 
You can go up to 70 series and not have an issue. Tire selection is better and they usually is cheaper because of the qty produced.

You should change your spare to the matching size. To save some money u can get a used spare if any type , since it's only a spare to get you home or toi service. If you have the cash , match the spare with other tires you put on.

Someplaces just wont accept you putting on a different tire size. Im sure for liability reasons. Most will do it from my experiences. With going on the 70's , you may or may not experience slight run at full turn , 90% of us do not have any at all.

As far as traction goes everything is always a crapshoot since IMO there is no way to comare in the exact same conditions. Just how I feel about it.
 
I totally agree on the traction thing. You can find good and bad on all tires. But advice is still a good thing.

O.k. where/how & how much for the FJ wheels? I was telling my friend who is pushing me to get new wheels I wished the 4Runner had come with those.
I would love to get my hands on some if they aren't super expensive. Of course I would love to get my hands on those tires and the lift and....
Well, I'll have to dream about that for now. But let me know about the wheels!

Repeating what I've said in other threads (because I don't know how to link to them.)

First off, save your money and don't worry about the spare if you are only going up one size. I've run the stock size Doneflop on one corner with my upsized BFG's with no issue (short term for several days to get a flat repaired). Didn't get any ATRAC, VSC, etc... lights or codes.

Second, I'm a Mich fan. Not sure how to convince you to give the A/T^2 a try but search the threads about it. Mich is top of the line that all the other companies use as a benchmark. The latest is an improvement over the old A/T which I was extremely happy with (quiet on-road, no slippage in rain, excellent in snow.) I wish the A/T^2 was out when I had to ditch the Doneflops but I got the CT instead (I already had the KO's for my winter setup.)
