best type/brand of gasoline for a 4runner?

I use Shell also, I have the V8 and put 89 in her and she seems to like it....

For my Sienna (regular gas), i use Chevron.
For my TSX and G500 (both require premium gas), i use either Chevron or Shell.
Reason: Chevron puts "Techron" in all their gasoline grades. Shell puts "V-Power" only in the premium grade gasoline.

i've been using Chevron for long time. in my TL it requires premium, and on my 4R, i put 89. back in the Shell's day, like Thai mentioned about the "V power", i only pump premium if i have to go to Shell.
gas mileage is pretty good, well of course it has to do with driving habit.
but on my most recent trip in the 4R, A/C on, 4 adults and 1 kids in the whole trip and average of 75-80mph, from Sacramento to Santa Cruz Mystery Spot, then Santa Cruz beach boardwalk. then stuck in traffic for 1 hours, then head to Mountain View and back to Sacramento, total of about 340 miles plus or minus. i used about 20 gallons of gas, which means there's still about 2 gallons reserved. i am happy of what my 4R did, and it's a 4X4 V8.

Mid grade (87 around here) "Top Tier" and big box warehouse gas does the trick for me. I'm not the person who drives around trying to save $0.05 a gallon. Every few months I throw in a can of Sea Foam or a Chevron Techron fuel system cleaner.
Oh and I'm pretty skeptical when Shell and others tout their fuel as being "cleaner".

I have been using Velero 87 octane (mid-grade here in Colorado). Running great, no problems vs more expensive fuel.

In my area there is little difference among the brands of gasoline.
Gasoline sold under the names Exxon, Sunoco, Wawa, Sheetz, Turkey Hill and countless other no-name brands ALL come from the SAME local gasoline wholesaler.
Hess is the exception as their fuel still comes from their refinery.
While some of these "brands" may have different additives put in when the tanker is loaded, the base gasoline is the SAME.
It is so interesting/funny when people in my area say brand XXX is watered down, crap and brand YYY is great.
After I tell them to go to the local gas wholesaler and watch all the tankers lined up waiting to get the SAME gas they usually change their tune.
For me, the brand of gas is less important than the retailer I get it from.
Personally I prefer a retailer that sells a LOT of gas so their stock turns over constantly, one who invests in their station & equipment and keeps it clean and maintained.

I use name brand; Hess, Sunoco, Mobil are the dominant brands around here. I avoid the bottom feeders/"Brand X" stations.
87 Octane is fine according to the manual, so that's what I use.
A bigger factor however is something that you have no control over.
Government at both the Federal & State levels is often dictating what you can burn. Different states require different formulations, including oxygenation agents such as MTBE, Ethanol & other crap as a result of whining from the environmental whack jobs.(and the corn growers' lobby) You can't buy non-ethanol gas around here anymore, for example. And many stations won't even post the actual content; you see something like "may contain up to X percent ethanol"
The first problem with this felgercarb is that this crappified gas is a lower energy density product; it contains less energy per gallon. Therefore, your mileage & performance suffer.
Second, the additives can be harmful to older vehicles. Their fuel systems contain components that were never designed to be in constant contact with alcohol, for example. Rubber components can swell & fail, for example.
The trend is towards ever more government interference in this kind of thing, particularly with the Democrats holding Congress & the White House.

I havn't even put gas in my new 4Runner (Dealer included a full tank) but I always try to buy Sunoco, not really because their gas is better but I like where it comes from better.
I think much more important than the brand of gas is the freshness of the gas. I have always avoided "slow" stations that don't see many customers. Especially with this ethonal stuff gas is vulnerable to break down and water condensation. You don't want gas that has been sitting in a tnak for two months. Luckily most of your name brand gas stations are pretty busy in most areas.
