Best Window Fan?

With summer coming up and more free time, I see myself relaxing in my room more often. With my monitor, xbox, computer, and laptop all running, the least to say is that my room heats up...very quickly. I've done some research and I've come up with that the best way to keep my room cool in by installing a "window fan". Basically a fan that fits inside your window (it may stick out a little) and draws the hot air from your room and blows it outside. or vise versa.

Now, is anybody was too lazy to read that first paragraph. Do you have any recommendations with window fans? Any good ones, or bad ones I should stay away from? Looks like I'll be spending anywhere from $50-$150. Thank in advance for any help!

I'm guessing a fan is a fan. For your plan to work, you'll want to get some fiberboard or plastic sheeting or something to seal around the fan, and leave your door cracked.

Here's another plan, though - do you really need all those electronics on at the same time? Try turning off the stuff you're not using, and you'll get less waste heat and a smaller electricity bill. My power bill went down by 10% when I started turning off my PC when I wasn't using it.

OP, I'm not an expert on fans by any stretch, but I do know that consumer reports researches and rates household appliances and other devices as part of their business as and there are other websites as well. It sounds like you've done some research and know at least a price range. Maybe make a list of pros and cons of each model to help you narrow it down?

Or, just go buy the one in the middle of that pack you've found between $50-$150.

Get whatever they have in Costco or BJs. If it sucks, just bring it back. Very liberal return policies.

Can't give you specifics on manufacturers, but getting a double fan (one that can blow air in at the same time it blows air out) helps a ton.

Window Fan


I bought a pair of the "dual mode" window fans at Wal-Mart. I think the two of them were about forty bucks. I have had them for ten years now and both still work just fine after all these years. I have one of them in the kitchen and a second one in my bedroom.

While I can set each one to "dual" mode (one sucking air in and the other blowing air out), I find it easier & more effective to have the bedroom fan set to both sides blowing hot air OUT and the kitchen set to both sucking cool air IN. They save me money because I don't have to use my central A/C unless it gets above 80 to 85 degrees outside or it gets very humid.

My fans look something like the one shown below - but they have a little flap on both sides that pulls out to match the size of the widow opening. Obviously, some windows are wider than others.
