Bfg's new at tire!

I was at a 4 wheel shop today and was told that last night the staff were all at a BGF Party and that BFG is unveiling a new All Terrain Tire supposedly in September. Supposedly this tired is supposed to better and more badass then their current all terrain and is supposed to blow the rest of the competition away. Does anyone know anymore about this new tire? I need to buy new tires asap and am wondering if I should try holding out for these tire.

If you need new tires asap then it sounds to me like waiting until September isn't really an option unless asap means something different to you than it does to me.

True, but I was thinking about buying some used tires to get me though until September.
 
Instead of buying used tires I'd buy whatever new tire you were planning on buying before hearing about these. Then when they come out you can see if they're really that good or just sales hype. If it's just hype then keep the new tires you bought and don't sweat it. If you really want the new ones buy them and sell yours as used. The hit you'll take on selling the tires will probably be less than how much used tires will cost you provided you don't put a ton of miles on them and keep them well aligned.
 
I really like that, with the addition of the shoulder protection. An improvement over the AT/KO for sure.

The article was pretty dismissive about the sidewall features but it seems like that would be some nice added protection when aired down...

But yeah, my tires are brand new :D I'll wait a couple years to see how they rate for real then decide if my next set will be back to BFGs.
 
I am bit curious how these will perform, i have the current since that is what came on mine from buy the wheels already on my 4R. the new design maybe better since the last row of tread has actually an opening in the lug to allow mud/snow to maybe be pushed out. the current really doesn't IMO. Definitely subjective till people start to run them.

If anyone wants to be the giny pig by all means get them and report back LOL
 
Except for the shoulder lugs and outside tread blocks looks like the same old tired BFG all terrain. I agree with FrontRange4Runner. Much better choices than waiting for this tire. I've been eying the new Mickey Thompson ATZ P3's myself. With that said get what makes ya happy brother.
 
It doesn't look like this design would channel water any better than the current tire. IMO that's the biggest issue with BFG's AT. I've run them twice, once on an F150 and also on a Wrangler and I won't do it again. I spend too much time on the interstate in the rain and there are designs with much better resistance to hydroplaning.

OKAY... Here I go, please forgive me in advance for taking this thread to serious.

I cannot name my source, but I can tell you he is sponsored by BFG and owns a multi-million dollar off-road company. He and I go way back (at one point i worked for him) and we talked about this "new" tire.

At a glance it looks like the same old AT with a more modern and protected sidewall. And in short...it is, kinda...not really... The tire announced to the press is the RED LABEL, for sponsored racers. It is not exactly what we would get if we ordered a set. Just like the red label KTM2, they have a much much higher silicate percentage in their compound.

here is my gripe:

Most (many) Tire manufactures like Cooper, Hankook, MT, ~Goodyear, and even Firestone have released a high(er) silicate compound tire for their AT and ATM tires. They are using compounds typically reserved for their UHPT (ultra high performance tires) and adding them to the tread of their truck tires because truck and SUV owners are increasingly more worried about wet and dry traction and safety over tread wear. But there are a couple...BFG and Michelin who want to continue banking on natural rubber compounds that wear much longer safety be damned.

BFG has been running a higher silicate compound on their mud tire for years, but they are just now (or in a few months) giving their beloved AT the same treatment. They are not the only one, Goodyear just started using the higher silicate a couple years ago. So if there is a better traction, safer, and slightly faster wearing AT tire on the market already, why does BFG wait so long to release one...? Because BUBA in his 1973 K10 with 3 diamond plate toolboxes wants a tire that is hard as a rock and last until the sides crack out....

The only reason they are releasing this tire now is because racers want a tire than has more surface contact than the KTM2 and they want it to be able to grab on the hard pack and the dirt better. If it had not been for several stadium drivers begging for it, they would not have even considered catching up with the times.

So my suggestion (it is biased), buy a Cooper ST/MAXX. They are (and have been) high silicate and they are American made just like BFG. :hatsoff:

Exactly. I've never had problems with the current AT/KO, but that sharp shoulder that goes straight from tread to sidewall with no real shoulder in between always worries me.
I'm doing MTs in a few months so probably won't be getting these, but wouldn't rule it out in the future.

As for the rubber/tread compound - some people will continue to run the tire as it hardens, even though there is tread remaining. There are also people who run softer compounds down to being bald, I see them in parking lots every day. Both situations are unsafe.

Replacing tires at the right time is a choice, but I think T4R.org people know when that time is.

Yup.

I have always liked the BFG ATs but they MUST be replaced before they get anywhere near bald. They work fine in the rain down to 50% tread but then start to get bad. By 75% tread gone they might as well be bald. I always wait too long to change the tire, then the next time it rains I'm slipping all over the place.

The good news is, with rotation and proper alignment, I got tons of mile off them, so should have no problem replacing at around 65% tread ware and still having 60k or more life.
 
My BFG all terrains have been on for 7 years. I can tell they are getting hard because the last 3/8 inch of tread does not seem to wear at all over the last year. Rain does not matter to me because I live in the desert and it only rains several times a year and I just do not go any where when it does rain even though I have never had a problem the few times I was in the rain. I know my next tires will be BFG again. I just hope they did not ruin my favorite tire.

I had BFGATKOs (E-rated) on my runner before my duratracs. The only reason I would consider going back to BFGs is road noise. Duratracs are a lot louder.

The Duratrac just seems to perform better. Better on road traction and offraod, as far as I'm concerned. And I like the way the Durtatracs look too, for whatever that's worth.

That being said, I'm intrigued by this new tire. If it can offer better on-road wet/rain/snow traction, and remain quieter than the duratrac, then I would buy these. I would like to see them with the RWL on the inside. Photoshop anyone?
