bigger alternator installed

my alternator just pooped out today. I'm going to replace it tomorrow. I'll see if I can find this model. Thanks for the info!

Elton, was this a bolt on? or did you have to do any other mods to get it to work?
 
I ended up just replacing it with another stock one. After talking with some other people, I really dont have any need for a larger alternator at the moment, so that was my reasoning for sticking with the stock size. Overall its a very easy DIY change. Much easier than the starter IMO. Damn it was cold outside though! I need a heated garage!
 
SO as far as wiring from the battery, does the alt go directly to the battery or through the fuse box?
I want to run 4ga from my battery and re-wire everything connected to the terminal.
As far as I can tell its alt/starter/fuse box.
Did you use OEM wire or upgrade?
 
ive got the factory wire it needs to be drilled a little and a 4ga with 100amp fuse to the battery plan to redo it with 2ga i think
 
Don't take this the wrong way but why a GM part? have they fixed the massive problems the alternators had back in the day? I remember replacing multiple alternators on my dads truck as well as my Trans Am years ago. They always overheated and failed. Only Toyota alternators that i've ever had fail were on my supercharged MR2 because it sat under the distributor that developed an oil leak. Even then it only took out the regulator and that was cheap to pick up and a rebuilder.

Toyota makes 80 amp as well as 100amp alternators that will most likely bolt right in place. The 80 amp is easy to spot as the case is physically a little bigger than the stock 65amp version and looks more squared off. the 100 amp was available on the 2nd gen MR2s on models with the electric power steering. (probably on a lot more vehicles since then as well since the second gen ISx50 cars have electric power steering assist as well, and most of the line up offers a lot more gadgets than the 3rd gen 4runners.

easy to say without doing the work yourself, point being he has found a hi-out put alt for our trucks that is cheap and easy to fit on, quality of parts
is widely variable between the same part number depending on the manufacture, so i don't think a broad statement such as "GM alt's suck"
can really sum anything up here.

But feel free to go out and buy a mr2 alt and make it fit on the 3rd gen and post up here as a better alternative to this thread/alternator. (no sarcasm here, it's just the fact of the matter)

As far as Gm alt's are concerned i do believe they have gotten better then what they where back in the 80's early 90's if those are the ones your referencing and again manufacture and place that they where made makes a huge difference, like with a bosch alt for example, you can buy chinese,german, or brazil made alt's all from the same company but different quality for the same part number from the same manufacture and on top of that you have maybe 5-6 major manufactures of alt's, so again broad statement like GM alt's suck isn't necessarily correct ...

not ripping on ya or anything just saying is all.....
 
You should let everyone know how it is after a few weeks. I wonder if the connections to this larger alternator will hold up. I say this because I have heard of some trucks in my father's company who had issues with some of the electrical cabling overheating due to not being sized for the larger alternator. (the mechanics assumed no issues would be seen if they installed a larger alternator).

We are talking about bucket trucks, so of course the electrical draw was much higher than a consumer truck. But, if you are powering a sizable system (not sure what you are drawing), you technically could put yourself in a situation of drawing more amperage than your wiring harness can handle..

Just a thought..

i would think it would be fine as people run heavy amps for speaks and such without upgrading wiring through the whole truck but not something i'm comfortable giving a definite answer on but if your concerned use these below to come up with a real idea of whats going on

I've had the cs-144 bolted up to my truck for aprox. 4 months now with zero issues. I'm not sure what people are concerned about with this mod. The alt doesn't overload your system. The 4runner electrical system will function as normal as long as you rig your wiring right following the diagram found in the link to YotaTech. The stock battery wiring is more than enough to handle this alt. You really should consider switching your belt out though for a shorter one. The pulley is in fact smaller than the stock 4runner belt and even if you think you have no issues now, they can quickly develop when switching to a different pulley/alt. size. It's cheap and easy maint. for peace of mind if nothing else. Belt squeal is a horrible thing to have to live with! :driving:
