Biggest size tire for stock 97 SR5

I did some searching and saw that 265/75R16s would be the biggest size on a stocker with out any rubbing. Correct? I come from Jeeps where I can fit a big tire with barely any rubbing. My dad wants to get some more aggressive, a lil bigger tires for the 4runner. He told me to search and now i feel llike a kid in a candy store.

Trust your search my friend. A 265/75/16 is roughly a 31x10.50. Not too many Jeeps I've seen can fit a 31" tire without a lift or rubbing.

I have 31s on my wrangler....no rubbing but that's beside the point. Thanks for the info. I hate bfg a/ts, but it seems that those are the best for his needs. I'm gonna talk him into a small 2 inch lift. It's a disease man.

The Wranglers the excpetion and really is a quite a different animal on and off road compared to a 4Runner. The 4Runner direct competition is the Cherokees and they won't fit 265/75s on them in any year without a lift.

Squeeze these under a '99 Cherokee if you can.:lightsaber:

i had to have a 2" lift on my jeep to fit those tires and still had rubbing under flex, lol both xj's and zj's .
maybe the wrangler series (yj's tj's) are different but i doubt they are much more then the runner can handle if not the same, i have just found the runners seem to take the biggest tire without a lift from my personal experience.

And those are duratracs, Those are the tires I have on my jeep...I LOOVE THEM

this was after my 2 inch lift

Anyway, I'm leaning towards bfg a/ts or duratracs for the runner...maybe even cooper STTs

Yes,that's my truck and I love the Duratracs andf they draw alot of looks at lights from other truck guys. :naughty:

Agreed. On a TJ or YJ you can easily fit 32's with no rubbing...

Not on a TJ or Yj, they will either rub the leaf spring on the Yj and on the TJ it will rub the front CA and rear spring perch....but that's beside the point.

Whats a good tire/wheel package place? The wheels on the runner are lookin hideous. Alot of pitting and crap like that.

I would order from Tirerack. Have ordered 3 sets of wheels and tires from them for various cars & trucks and love their service.

Also, the biggest tire I had on my 97 was the 265/75/16's. They would only rub in front going into a steep driveway. I now went to 275/70/16's. No rubbing. I think the type/design of the tire makes a big difference also.

Yeah, it has the 265/70R16s on it right now. Crappy wrangler RT/s tires. Either going with the duratracs like i have on my Jeep or some BFG A/ts. Gotta decide on a decent looking wheel. I noticed a lot of guys on here keep the stockers, which is cool. I definitely like the 99-02 wheels.

i have the BFG A/T in 265/75 on my stock runner and it only rubs when you slightly turn left or right going down a steep hill..

otherwise your fine and they look awesome too

I've owned many different models of jeeps (still have a 97 TJ and a 75 CJ5) and installed lifts on quite a few jeeps now and, depending on the wheel and tire, 32's can easily be installed without rubbing.

don't know bout a 97, but on my 2000 I have 265- 75 BFG mud T/A with 2" lift and they rub on full compression. but they are on 8" wide wheels with only 4" inch backspacing. they've not hurt the body or done any damage to the tire.

This is my next question, I'm familiar with what backspacing and width to run on wranglers but when it comes to 4runners I am clueless. What is the backspacing on the stock wheels? If he gets new wheels I'm sure he want's it close to the stock backspacing.

You mind posting a pic of how far your wheels/tires stick out from the wheel wells? I'm curious to see how it looks on a 4runner. I think a bit of a wider stance for it would be good.

Stock BS'ing is about 4.3-4.6" depending on the style of stock wheel. 4" on aftermarket wheels is pretty standard which means they will stick out .3-.6" farther out than stock wheels. It's hard to find 8" wheels with less then 4" BS'ing.

Yeah, that's where I ordered my duratracs. They actually made the price cheaper than tire racks price, so i saved about 10 bucks per tire. Great guys over there, will do almost anything to get your business. Can't wait to give this old truck a new look.

Looking at these wheels, 16x8 with 4.48" BS

with these tires in 265/75R16

Seems like good combo, no?

alright, im pretty sure he's gonna okay that combo. Would the tires fit better with a 1 inch BL? I know on jeeps, the t case linkage needs to be adjusted when you do a body lift. Same on the 4runners? It should look good right?

Oh and this is my 4runner in an old pic, sorry for the crappy pic. Only other things it has done is a pioneer head unit and a snowboard rack.

Got 165k on it and NO major problems ever. Still runs new. I drove this thing to hell and back for 3 years...to be honest, i'd be afraid to do that to my wrangler. Anyway, i think those chambers should look decent on it, idk how it'd look since i have seen the same rims on it for 13 years

well guys, a bump from the dead. My dad finally got tires and this is what he got....without me knowing lol. Kinda disappointed in his choice in wheels. I'll post pics when he gets em on. He definitely needs to lift it at least an inch or so now to make up for this haha
