Bilstein 5100 garbage!!!!

Shock body is ~50mm diameter, groove depth is ~1mm. It is partly cloudy, and ~40 degrees, do you want anything else from me before I come back inside? :violin:

The shock body is 50mm- and the groove depth is 1mm. BTW- the spring perch also encircles that clip keeping it from opening up if that's important to you...

so I don't have pictures, just got home from shop, but the snap ring is gone. they are calling it a snap ring failure. waiting for bilsteins response. Drivers side was fine though.

If possible, could you get us detailed pictures of 360 degree around the shock body right at the snap ring grooves?
 
can't right now, headed to san fran for the week but I can tell you the body was very scratched all the way down. Just called, they took it off and did not find the snap ring. very unlikely that it was installed wrong, they are waiting to hear from bilstein about the fact that it was been moved multiple times. They think maybe it should have been replaced once only. but not positive.

Alright. Using these calculations Careful Calculations Affect Ring Design we need to figure two things: 1)Ring Shear and Groove Yield.

Using the above calculations and SWAGing material as HR1018 (45K material - for comparison Hardened 8620 is 110K material) and using [MENTION=85512]eddiebx[/MENTION] and [MENTION=65614]Antman[/MENTION]s dimensions then we can calculate the force required to shear the snap ring is 21,900 lb. you have about 1,000 lbs there at rest.

BUT! You also have to calculate groove yield! Lower number of the two fails first. That number calculates out to be only 10,900 lbs. Still a K (safety factor)of around 10. Now groove yield is the BEGINNING of failure. Catastrophic failure is going to be much higher number.

Now, I do not know the material spec and Bilstein might even use their own materials with custom hardening, but I picked pretty much the worst case scenario and am confident the ring would not fail before the groove if installed properly. Good snap rings are cheap so My figures are probably way conservative. Please don't take these numbers as real. I did this just to see what forces COULD be in a snap ring failure. Too many unknown variables (exact measurements, material spec) to get real numbers but you get the idea.
 
these things are so incredibly easy to install. you literally need no specialized tools whatsoever. If you've got a level surface, a set of ratchets, a jack stand, and a couple hours of free time anyone can put on a set of 5100's no problem (torque wrench is a good idea, but not essential). No spring compressors, no special sockets, no sweat, no worry that you're getting ripped off, or that some idiot isn't doing things properly. There are all kinds of tutorials on how to do the work all over the web, just ask Google. {/end rant}

OK, OK. So...how deep would that pothole have to be- at 20mph- to impose a force of 11,000 lbs on the groove.

Sorry guys. I really don't feel the need to take hours to calculate a force that nobody, including me, cares about lol. If you want to read up about it though I will give you three words that you have to understand before going any further: Ready? Conservation Of Energy. You can start the derivations there lol.

I just had this same problem. This was my second adjustment done by a shop both times. Same place. What was the result of your experience Joey? What did Bilstein say? Very frustrating...
 
I was wondering if I can buy 5100s from bilstein west coast headquarter and have them installed there. Am not too far from them in cali.

Well thats not good. Maybe these are one time clips or possibly folks are distorting the clips by opening them too far. Guess I'll buy new clips if I go to the top notch just to be safe.
 
Bilstein has still not responded to the question of can you move clips to another position once installed?
Parts were shipped to them for inspection.
I did get refunded the whole setup and towing cost.
They believe that the snap ring failed and got pushed through the gap in the bottom plate.
Will not be using these again. Waiting for my Kings to ship!

Thanks for keeping us posted. Would like to know as I just had mine moved to the highest setting 3 weeks ago.
 
So I have to give Bilstein some credit regarding their warranty department. I have been speaking with Lisa and she has a great attitude. She is currently trying to hunt down a full replacement for me. I also asked for a couple replacement C clips and she overnighted them to me. I'm headed to the shop tomorrow to have the C Clip replaced as that is clearly the part that broke. I want to at least get my rig drivable.

Also, this is the second adjustment I did with the same clip. The first setting I had them on proved no issues and I put them through the ringer with some extensive offroading and trail driving. I am starting to assume that these clips can not be used for more than one adjustment.

I'll report back after the new clips are in.
 
I'm thinking of moving up to 1.75 so I'm interested to know if C clips are single use. I did a quick web search and couldn't find anyone selling just the clip.

Moved mine twice. Worked fine and I put mine through the ringer. I just used some needle nose to move the ring very carefully then banged it back in with a rubber mallet.
