Bilstein 5100's Specific to 2010+ 4Runners

So the fronts are set at the max 2.5 - did you replace the rears as well with the 5100's and, if so, did you do the 1.5" or 2" spacer?

The truck is 'leaned back' (with its mind on its money, and money on its mind).

I think he's got front to back, side to side and all that shat :lmao:

We have soooo much fun here!

I am diggin' the TRD wheels. I will have these wheels, oh yes, I will have these wheels! Just a little smaller Nitto TG.

What are you putting to lift the rear? I'd recommend some 895e's

Not sure yet. 895's?

So with these 5th Gen specific 5100's I'm assuming the bushing issue mentioned by some has been fixed? As I recall some people posted that the bushing was smaller/thinner than OEM shocks and although it worked it wasn't exactly the same - these now are/will fit like OEM??
Thanks - and if it was addressed sorry for missing that:)

I believe the bushing is the same as OEM. I posted a pic in an earlier entry.

Now that the new parts are out I am just debating on if I want to do a spacer in the rear.

Yes I replaced the the rear shocks with 5100's. I was thinking about adding a 1.5" spacer or replacing the springs not sure which direction to go. That first pic looks more " leaned back " than it really is. Its around an inch higher in the front than in the back. either going to lower 5100's to 1.75 or add rear lift spring/spacer.

I just picked up the new bilstein's 24-196499 last week. I was told the difference is the bushing mount on the bottom of the strut. Plan on installing them on Monday.

RG79 -- Now that you've had the new shocks mounted for a bit, how does the front end feel (aside from being a little nose high)? Any negatives with the ride quality (i.e. too firm, etc) or does it feel "great"???

Just curious since Toytec called this morning and said they got a set of the new 5100's in today and can build them up with the CO's for me, but they haven't tested the new shocks to see how they compare with the old P/N. They said the stroke is definitely shorter (as expected) but they didn't have any idea how the new valving/compression would effect the ride quality yet.

I'm inclined to have them me up a set and be the "guinea pig" but it would be good to get your impressions before I pull the trigger...

They were a little stiff at first but after a week they softend up quite a bit. I moved them down to 1.75 because 2.5 was to high with out adding coils in the rear. They now are a perfect balance of nice ride and stiffness(feels great)bilstein made these shocks specificly for the 5th gen and as far as I can tell they are spot on. I'm heading out to the desert tomorrow morning and will report back on how they are off road. I hope this helps.....

Toytec CO's with New Bilstein Shock

Cool, thanks for the info. Just called and ordered a "modified" Ultimate lift from Toytec -- having them build up the front CO's with the new shocks (I also went with the Eibach 1.5" springs they just got in for the rear -- planning on a ~2.25/1.5 lift...but that's for another discusion).

They only got one set of the new 5100 front shocks in to take a look at and confirmed that the shock travel is shorter than the "old" part. They'd verified the other differences Bilstein told me but couldn't actually confirm how much the valving is firmer. For the time being they've decided not to pursue rev'ing the Ultimate kit with the new shock since the longer shock stroke is of bigger value than the modified valving for off-road use.

The other concern they had was that their springs are a little firmer than stock and they were uncertain how pairing a stiffer spring with the firmer valving would feel until they have someone test it.

So, now that I've placed the order (which won't actually be assembled and shipped till Tuesday, Jan 2nd), I'm wondering if I made the best choice. Keep my order as is and risk the front end being a little too firm with the new shock and spring or call them back and go with their tested front CO shock that uses the "old" shock which many on the forum have installed and have been running without issue...

I'm not going to be doing any real off-roading/rock crawling anytime soon (yes, this lift is primarily for looks) so the extra ~0.5" travel of the old shock isn't a big deal for me, but I do like the idea of having the "proper" bushing fit and valving of the new shock.

Worst case I'm figuring that I can replace the front shocks with a set of "old" 5100 shocks if I don't like the ride and sell the "new" 5100's to someone on here that is looking to use them with stock springs (or I could rebuild the COs with the stock springs assuming they're the same size as the Toytec springs). However, the only reason I'm OK with paying the premium for the fully assembled front COs is so I don't have to screw with a spring compressor and assembling the struts in my garage or paying the $50 for a shop to do it for me...

Any thoughts?

Just get the Icon coil overs and call it a day.....

Ha! An Icon kit would be nice and would have been in the running but it's too pricy for my needs (and budget) right now. Considering I started going down this road planning to spend $400 + shipping for 4 Bilstein shocks and eventually convinced myself to do a full lift with new UCAs... totalling ~ $1500... I've gotta draw the line on the cost for now (I have a basement to finish and new 29er MTB on the list of big 2012 expenses...).

I think I'm going to like the Toytec kit just fine the more I've thought about it tonight. Good thing we don't have any new snow around here so I can get everything installed next weekend without having to feed the powder itch first! I'll get pics posted once everything is installed.
