Black Plasti-Dipped Wheels w/ Silver Lip

Well, I thought it would be tough to do (and it was), but so far I've pulled this off on three wheels.

I first masked off the lip just leaving the center and spokes exposed, and went at them with the plasti-dip. When taking the tape off, I had to cut along the edges so that removing the tape would not pull off the desired parts of the coating. Definitely takes patience, which I don't have much of.

I'm thinking about clear-coating the wheels so that the edges of the plasti-dip aren't as likely to peel off. I'm also considering just permanently painting the wheels like this. Like I said, so far only three wheels are done, but I should have the fourth done this weekend. Let me know what you all think or if you have any questions!

it looks nice but you could get straighter lines by use a plastic tape sold by 3m that is used for this type of paint work

also if you consider this to be something you want permanent. You'll want to sand the rims

Thanks. Could you send me a link to that tape you're talking about? I just used regular blue 3m painter's tape.

Good god that is hideous...sorry, I don't like it at all. And I love plasti-dipped wheels. Maybe if the center cap was black too, might look better, IMHO.

I'm not dissing your truck, your runner looks good, I've just never been a fan of the black rims w/ silver edges. Reminds me of a lowered 1999 Honda Civic with a coffee can muffler that sounds like a lawn mower...

imo, they look damn good.

i never wanted to really to paint my rims black due to having a silver 4runner. i just felt it made the wheels look dirty more than mesh well.

but with the style that you did it, i am realllllly digging it. i like the center cap still silver, and the lip. it makes it flow with the silver excellently.

if i do it, i think i am going to go straight to paint and skip the plastidip.

Same here. I've been wondering if black wheels would look good on my silver runner. And well if I did them the way you did I think is like it better then all black. I wouldn't clear coat plasti dip just because if you didn't sand down your rims it probably won't stay on very long. If your gonna put money into em better to paint them or do what some of the guys on here do and apply spray on bed liner.

that link explains the different tapes. the kind I mentioned you usually get at a auto body supply store and is used in air brush and multi-layer jobs. it basically doesn't let the paint bleed and you can put it off at a certain angle and not worry about the paint coming with it.

btw, I was actually planning on doing this myself and i'm not sure now. since you have done it. I think I might do bronze or gun metal

Krupnation: I understand where you're coming from, and I can see what you're saying about them looking like wheels on a Civic. I agree with you, but I also like how Hondas look with this type of wheel - I've had 2 Hondas in the past, both lowered, with exhausts, sporting wheels with the same color scheme I do appreciate you saying that you like the look of my 4runner overall, though. I understand that people's tastes are different.

I agree with what Trevloc says about the wheels looking dirty when they're completely plasti-dipped. The wheels shown in the recent thread by 4runners, where he left the center caps silver, was a significant improvement, and inspired me to give this a shot.

Tuscon4runner: Yeah, I don't think I'll clear coat it since I really don't want to have to sand my wheels at this point. Bed-liner is definitely out of the question, though, lol.

Tacticalcustoms: Thanks for that link. I'll have to look into getting better tape for future endeavors. Do you think it'll really make a big difference (due to the nature of plasti-dip)? Anyway, I like the bronze wheels on your prelude. What color is your 4runner? If it's silver, I'd definitely stay away from bronze

Indeed, I know that :happens: regarding the lines. It bothers me, but they're not too noticeable from a few feet away or more, which I can live with. I'm not worried about anyone getting too close and inspecting them, lol.

Hopefully this thread inspires people to give this a try with their wheels, or at least to get creative with plasti-dip :cheers:

So you finally plasti-dipped the wheels too! Not bad! Mine are still holding up like new and i've been driving around everyday since i did it! My only concern is that since you left the lip silver the plasti-dip will have those edges that can peel easily since it doesn't have a seal around the whole wheel. I wonder what would happen in a car wash Anyways, let us know how it holds up and remember everyone that he can easily peel it off if he ends up not liking it later on.

I like mine so much that i would like to get mine permanent too. I might get them powder coated if i can get a good deal. Depends on how long the plasti-dip holds up.

it's been over a month on mine and they still look fresh and i drive around everyday! I've been on some gravel roads and grass, but mostly on highways. There is no peeling at all. This stuff is tougher than i though! Also, i washed them down recently with a hose on full blast and it didn't affect it in anyway!

I would like to know how this guy's held up since he left the edges silver...

yeah thats my thought, there is no edge for the plasti dip to wrap around. so im interested to hear how they are holding. i plan on doing it, but i might just go straight to paint.

I like the look, but I too am worried about it holding up. I found the duplicolor grey wheel paint that I'm gonna try, but I was still interested in the Plasti-dip

Sorry it's taken me a while to respond. The wheels are actually holding up great. I've driven in rain, over gravel, and just regular road and they look just as good as when I first did them. The edges aren't peeling or giving way at all. I haven't washed them yet, but I'll report back after I do.

So a couple days ago I gave the t4r a wash, and powerwashed the wheels while I was at it. None of the plastidip came off, and the edges didn't lose hold or anything like that. If you're out there and contemplating this, I'd say go for it. So far, so good here.
