Black roof rails

Hey guys, new member but not new to the forum. Thought I could chime in since I got a lot of help with my decision from this thread. I decided to wrap my roof rails and end caps in black vinyl. Painting is a cheaper and more durable way to do it, but I'm super picky and can't commit to permanently painting something without knowing what it will look like ahead of time hah.



But I had the roof rails and end caps of my 2105 SR5 wrapped in 3M 1080 Series Satin Black. I had doubts about choosing satin over matte but really glad I went with satin. The 1080 3M Satin black is more matte than it is gloss; exactly what I wanted. I removed the silver roof rails from the black mounting brackets along with the end caps ahead of time so it would be easier for the installer to wrap. I also specifically asked to leave the channel open so the OEM crossbars can move freely for any roof/ski rack. I left a slider from the OEM cross bars on each roof rail when I handed them to the installer so he could measure where to start/stop the vinyl.

When reinstalling the rails, I wrapped thread seal tape around the white nipples in the truck body, that the mounting brackets bolt to. This was probably over cautious (especially because I live in So. California) but that is a weak spot for a potential leak into the cabin. A silicone bead around the bottom would have been ideal.

That looks great. I plastidipped mine and they look great right now. However, I don’t have any crossbars yet. Soon I’ll be getting some Thule or Yakima bars and accessories to carry my two kayaks and I’m worried about how the plastidip is gonna hold up

Possible? Yes, easy? Not really.

There are 4 small Allen screws on the bottom of each rail, impossible to get them off without removing the rail which is what I ended up doing. If you don’t remove those little screws the vinyl will be over them if you have to try to cut and tuck..... upside down with like 1.5” of room to work.

I did it without removing the rails. It looks good from the side, but there are a fair amount of ripples and wrinkles on the side facing in towards the roof.

not work the hassle, take them off, remove the ends, wrap them, reassemble and have a beer.

Just clean the bare hood an rubber feet with a paper towel and some rubbing alcohol before reinstall.

I plastidipped mine on the truck b/c I didn't want to mess with the seals. It was a pain in the ass to do. I was kicking my self when I popped them off to install my Gobi as I would have removed them if I were to do i over again.

UPDATE:
The first time I strapped something to my vinyl wrapped roof rails, the vinyl got a tiny tear and the pattern of the tie down rope I used got imprinted into the vinyl and even caused slight wrinkles. I simply strapped two surfboards to the stock cross bars using D-ring straps and it created this issue.

That being said, nobody but myself will be able to notice it and I'm still glad I went with the vinyl wrap option first so I could judge the color (satin vs matte vs gloss). Once the wrap deteriorates completely, I will have the rails stripped and powder coated semi-gloss/satin black.

Vinyl wrapped mine semi gloss black, super easy. just remove the end caps to tuck the edges. Will post pics asap!

Spray painted my rails black using the tutorial on Trail4Runner. A bit of a spotty paint job on my part but a short-term solution through snowboarding season before switching to a full rack next spring. Before and after pictures.
