blew a break line

Just FYI, the FSM says to start with the front. That's different from everything I've ever worked on, and I'm not sure why, but that's what it says.

OP, in your situation you're going to have to do a LOT of bleeding, and you have to follow the procedure in the FSM (ignition on, pump the hell out of the brakes, etc.) for it to work right.

You can read in the Tundra brake upgrade threads that people have to bleed them two or three times after just changing front calipers. With your system having been drained completely it's going to probably take more than that.

Are you sure that is not the procedure for the 2001+ models? My FSM is for a 2002, so my brake booster won't apply to that procedure, but Id like to confirm.
 
Depends on your production date as to which system you have. But the newer system does require tis to bleed it. Find a toy specialist with the software.

im doing the tundra brakes in a few weeks with a full suspension and new brake lines......now I read...im gonna have to find a specialist :tsk:

Most likely not. It applys to 2001+ models on into the 4th Gens, maybe even the 5th generation. I've not heard of a 2000 having a VTC system that requires this type of bleeding.

You only need the software if the MC/ABS module combo goes dry.

That is correct, anytime your abs goes dry it will need a power bleeder to make it easier. Or just be patient and bleed in fsm order repeatedly.

Maybe YOUR FSM says that, but my paper '99 says:

NOTICE:Bleed air of the rear brake first. If front brake is bled first, rear brake air cannot be bled.

It is also has a simple manual procedure for bleeding the MC if it goes dry that IS NOT in the 2002 FSM and does not require a computer.
( I figure this is good only for '99 and probably 2000 which are usually the same except for spring height):
HINT:

If the master cylinder has been disassembled or if the reservoir becomes empty, bleed the air from the master cylinder.
a) Disconnect the brake lines from the master cylinder.
b) Slowly depress the brake pedal and hold it
c) Block off the outlet plugs with your fingers, and release the brake pedal.
d) Repeat (b) and (c) 3 or 4 times.

I believe the switchover to the fancy booster system occurred in 2001, together with the VSC/TRAC and such silliness.

Pretty sure you have the same system as my 1999. See my post above. I have bled mine a couple of times with no problem and no computer. In fact, I HAVE Techstream and there is no brake module for it to access.

Thanks for confirming that...I only have a 2002 FSM, so it covers 98% of my 99, though I have always in every standard system bled the rear first.

I found this in the FSM that helped me out:

HINT:
 If any work is done on the brake system or if air in the
brake lines is suspected, bleed the air from the system.
 When bleeding, keep the amount of the fluid within the
line of reservoir between Min. and Max.
NOTICE:
 Do not let brake fluid remain on painted surfaces.
Wash it off immediately.
 With the reservoir cap removed, when depressing the
brake pedal, the fluid will spray.
1. FILL RESERVOIR WITH BRAKE FLUID
Fluid: SAE J1703 or FMVSS NO. 116 DOT3
2. In case of using TOYOTA hand-held tester:
BLEED HYDRAULIC BRAKE BOOSTER
HINT:
If the hydraulic brake booster has been disassembled, disconnect
the brake line from the hydraulic brake booster or if the reservoir
becomes empty, bleed the hydraulic brake booster.
(a) Turn the ignition switch OFF, depress the brake pedal
more than 40 times.

HINT:
When a pressure in power supply system is released, reaction
force becomes heavy and stroke becomes shorter.
(b) Turn the ignition switch ON, check that the pump stops after
approx. 30 to 40 sec.
NOTICE:
When the pump does not stop, repeat step (a) and (b) again.[/B](
c) With the ignition switch remained ON, depress the brake
pedal more than 20 times.

(d) Observe the procedure in step 4 and bleed the right and
left front brake caliper.

left rear brake caliper.

fluid flows out by first depressing.

I have a 2000 also and just did the Tundra brakes no too long ago. I didn't have any problems getting them bled (other than having to do it a couple of times).

Absolutely. Big honking red two volume job. Bought it new together with the truck back in 1999. Cost a couple hundred bucks and worth every penny by this time.

The first time I bled my brakes I effed up and ran the reservoir dry. That procedure I posted worked like a charm. Again, only guaranteed for 1999 (and probably 2000). And when I bleed, starting with the rear, it's one and done. The '99-'00 system is totally different from the '01-'02.

Yup, Toyota FSM for a 2002, same one.

I did omit a few items from that list though that are not relevant, such as using the Toyota scanner since nobody on these forums will have that.

Ah ok, that explains it. Strange that they switched the bleeding order between years. :wacko:
