Not much of a DIY guy, so need some advice. I have a 2004 SR5 V6 with about 145k miles. AC has been inconsistently making a slight ticking noise for the last few months (sound comes from behind glovebox)- never duplicates itself when I take it to a shop/dealership for routine service. Nonetheless, more often than not the intensity of the air flow seems off- high always works great, but sometimes level 2 and 3 feel very similar (seem too low). I've done a bit of research and now here's my question- what do I replace? Seems there's a motor blower, a motor blower resistor, and a motor blower control. My problem is different than most that I've read on forums where some people have ONLY the High setting working. All of my fan speeds work, but they are inconsistent in how strong the air blows (with the exception of High which is always strong).
Local dealer wants $264 for Blower Motor and $195 for resistor... seems insanely high. I can find 3rd party parts for about $75 for both, not sure about the blower control. Can anyone advise on what they'd do, including would you be okay using 3rd party parts and taking to a local shop for install? I normally do everything at an independent Toyota shop, but not sure if they would install non Toyota parts. Here's a link to something I think describes my issue best:
Tech Tip: Erratic 4Runner Blower Motor
Thanks.
