Ok so I was reading up on the blue wire diff lock mod and I am a little co fused on which end of the wire I'm grounding. The end coming from the harness? Or the end coming from the plug? Just need some clarification. Thanks

I am also getting ready to do this mod. Is there any disadvantage to being able to use diff lock in 2Hi and 4Hi ? Extra stress to locker? I won't be cutting the 5mph wire though

image.jpg was actually the first mod I've done on my runner, spliced the blue and red wire coming from the harness and just ground it out, I used a grey wire since I originally found this mod on a Tacoma forum lol

Well besides the fact that anyone who does this mod is basically bypassing the Toyota design. And for what?

I have to see much evidence that Toyota designed it wrong.

I say leave it alone. My eLocker works great and no need for the change.

I have to disagree. IMO the locker is more useful in 2wd than it is in 4low. In 2wd locked you go pretty far without having to use 4wd. If your in 4low it's a lot less likely you need to turn the locker on unless your stuck or on real tough spot on the trail. It doesn't hurt a thing to do this mod and only makes the purpose of the locker more functional. I believe toyota designed it this way because they don't want the average guy girl locking up the rear on pavement in 2wd.

I agree and is exactly why I did this mod

The only reason why I did the mod was so I could do amazingly tight cookies in the snow.....:driving:....JK!

I actually found I'm able to handle washboard dirt roads way better! With it locked I can go up dirt roads without a problem. Where as before I would lose momentum and have to down shift which created more torque and so I'd need to slow down. It was a pain in the ass, I'm still running stock suspension and so it's drastically exaggerate the bumps. I'm sure once I put new suspension on I won't have a need to lock the rear for washboards.

I did this to my truck too. I like having full control of my locker and deciding when it will be on or off. Not just in 4 wheel drive.

I like to do doughnuts in 2wd while there is snow on the ground, having the diff locked make them both loose traction instead of the diff doing what its supposed to and cut power to one and send it to the other.

its just nice to be able to lock up when ever 2wd, high, just personal preference.

I like to do donuts on wet pavement sometimes, lol. Snow is fun, gravel, grass etc though its not wire modded it will cut a donut in 2wd just fine. I have an e locker too but don't ever need it in 2wd. I may not wheel as hard as some guys but mine is plenty capable in 2wd or locked up in 4wd. As Brian stated I am fine without it in 2wd and I can also see the benefits for others who have done it and if it's what you are wanting to lock up in 2wd it's a great mod.

Toyota's design is out of liability for stupidity rather rather than optimal usefulness.

I did this mod in les than 12 hours of owning my t4r.

Yes ground the end from the plug!

And just for giggles I capped the other side of the cut wire.

Be sure to use blue wire though! If you use gray it won't work!....:biggrin1:

Well I just did it, quick 10 min job. Can't wait to test this thing out tomorrow. And as for earlier comments made that you shouldn't do this mod; a 2wd tacoma with the trd package can be optioned with a rr diff locker. So this works just fine in 2wd.

It's certainly a quick mod, a great 10 minute mod that adds a ton of smiles!

Like mentioned before, I would not recommend the second half of this mod which cuts the 5mph regulator, I certainly think that's a safety issue. For some reason my foot always gets heavy when I push the RR button, drifting gravel roads are so much fun!

Park, let us know how you like it once you give it a spin!

Oh and I'm sure it was mentioned already but the 5mph just means you can't lock till you slow down to said limit, however once locked travel as fast as is safe

So I took the runner down to the river after work. It's mostly soft sand. I found that using 4Hi with the diff lock, gave me great propulsion through the sand. I just wish I'd done this mod sooner. Turns on a dime offroad now. I'll throw up some pics.
