Bluetooth Issues Galaxy s4

So I ditched my iPhone 4 for a Galaxy S4, and now I am having issues in my 4runner.

First off, I have the JBJ Nav. The problem is that the car is no longer displaying caller ID names on incoming calls. It shows the incoming number only.

In addition, it no longer displays any artist or album data from Spotify.

I am thinking that the BT version might be too new for the truck. I am wondering if an update to the nav would make any difference.

Does anyone have a Galaxy S4? If so, please let me know if you have (had) the same problem and how you fixed it.

I have a Galaxy S3 and it works the same way. My caller ID does work although I think it's based on the contacts that you transfer to the JBL system vs. just what shows on your phone. You also need to keep your contacts under 1000 otherwise it won't transfer correctly, found that out and had to modify my database.

I don't use Spotify but I do stream via Bluetooth from my Amazon Cloud Player. No song data is displayed although the Pause/Play controls on the JBL head do work as well as the steering wheel controls to jump forward/back.

Toyota/JBL seem to have limited non iPhones to minimal functionality.

I transferred all my contacts last night. I hope that solves it. I haven't had a chance to try it out just yet.

I did a fair amount of research on this last night, and it looks like it isn't just Toyotas that are having issues with the SG4s. Compared to some, these issues seem mild. There was some talk about an update to the phone's firmware in the near future that will solve the compatibility issues. I guess the problem is that the head unit can't interpret the data coming from the newer BT.

Don't even get me started on iPhones, I'm not even going to touch the huge amount of connectivity issues with Apple products to automobiles in the market place! (Not just Toyotas)

That being said, I would guess the GS4 might be too new for the vehicle at the moment, phone technology updates faster than in-car systems and can easily surpass a vehicle's software/hardware. There may be a software update/firmware for both the phone and vehicle in the near future (not just for android but Apple and other compatibility issues we've seen in vehicles.) I believe the newer BT equipped cars run the newer BT standard so its not the transmission protocol, but more likely the head unit's firmware.

Let us know how the contacts thing works out, I'd be interested to know in case customers have questions.

Ok, here is what I have learned thus far.

1: Track info can be pushed to the head unit of the car and it displays fine...just not for Spotify. If you are an Android user, and also a Spotify user you probably already know that the Android app is very different than the iPhone app in some very bad ways. Before I got the new phone I bought a Google Nexus 10 tablet direct from Google when it came out. I have always been amazed on how crappy the UI is on the Android version. I had an iPhone then, so it was easy to compare.

We are just now able to save downloaded songs to an external SD card! But, it seems there are still some issues with bluetooth connectivity and song info...bummer.

On an Android forum, some guy said that it worked fine on his new 2013 vehicle though...so I guess it could be a little bit of both the age of the vehicle, and the sub par app. His car is a 2013 Lincoln MKX. He actually had the nerve to refer to it as his "truck". LMAO Driving a Lincoln MKX is not worth the Bluetooth working correctly.

2: Using the music player on the phone, the music info displays correctly. No problems at all. And here is where I have my issue...

Now I will basically be using two music players; one for everything I already own on disk, and the other for everything else I have on Spotify. Of course there is quite a bit of overlap because I added all the music I already liked onto Spotify playlists. Why wouldn't I? I had the best of both worlds. The problem is, now the song info won't be displayed so if a song comes on that I don't know I will have to look at the phone. And, if it is locked, well that is just a lot of fumbling around.

Even if I download all of my Spotify playlists, I still have to play them through the Spotify app because they are encrypted. My mp3s on disk are at the same bit rate as Spotify's "extreme quality" setting (320 kbs...not extreme really at all).

So anyway, I am now trying to figure out the most efficient way of dealing with the music fiasco and managing the data.

Still haven't been able to test the in car calls though. It was a busy afternoon, and no one wanted to talk to me I guess. But then again, I didn't call anyone either. :hiding:
