Boat trailer recommendations given the 4Runner’s 5000 pound tow rating?

Hi,

Any suggestions on a boat trailer that would weigh about 1,000 pounds would be appreciated since I’m a bit lost.

The boat I’m thinking about getting is a 2019 Chaparral 23 H2O Sport with a dry weight of 3600 pounds. Add 45 gallons of fuel at 6.1 pounds per gallon and it’s roughly 3900 pounds fueled on the trailer. Apologize if I missed this somewhere after searching around on the forum here. The reason I’m asking is bc I don’t want to get into an accident and be held liable by insurance for being over 5,000 pounds.

We have regularly towed 5000 lbs with two different 5th Gen 4Runners We are in a salt water environment, so we have a tandem axle aluminum trailer with disk brakes on both axles. Florida is pretty flat, so the towing is easy if you are well balanced. It is pretty easy to adjust a boat trailer to optimize tongue weight. Out trailer is about 1,000 lbs. I have gone to a certified scale with a typical load to verify. My only concern is you boat seems pretty light for a 23 footer. Ours weighs the same and is only 20’8” with a 8’2” beam. We also carry 66 gallons of fuel and have a relatively deep V hull.

Custom Trailer built in St Pete Florida for my hull. Owens & Sons is the name of the fabricator. They have a good reputation around here. I believe they have been in business over 30 years.

What engine and how much does it weigh?

23’ boat would typically have at least a 200 hp outboard motor which easily weighs 500+ lbs.

Galvanized steel trailer for a 23’ boat would weigh 1200 lbs. Aluminum would be lighter.

Speaking from considerable trailer boating experience, you are under gunned towing a 23’ boat with a 4Runner. It will do it, but at the coast of much shorter life for the drivetrain.
