Brake Actuator problem

Ive got a 2010 Trail with about 95K miles. Recently I've been noticing a strange noise when I press the brake, not the normal squishy sound from the pedal, this was coming from under the hood somewhere in the ABS assembly. No lights ever came on to indicate anything was wrong. It did seem like I had to place extra force on the brake pedal to brake normally. Brought it in to the dealer and they said there is a problem with the actuator and the entire assembly needs to be replaced. I haven't had any problems until this, and I've done every scheduled maintenance. Nevertheless, theyre estimating about $3K to fix. I feel like I'm probably getting the shaft, but I drive a lot for work and cannot risk having a brake failure on the highway. Has anyone else had this issue?

$3k sounds about right. When I was on the 4th gen forum a lot in the past I remember people spending around $2500 for the unit and I imagine the price has went up. It is not like the old days when you just went to NAPA and bought a new master cylinder for $80. The 1st 5th gens are getting at the age when this type failure will become more common. Search the 4th gen section for more info. You might try flushing/bleeding the system.

This is a very common failure on the LS460. Every car.
