Brake pads needed at 38K?

My TRD rear brake pads wore incredibly fast (first experience with them). The TRD front pads were put on at the same time - new rotors all around.

Rears wore down to metal last week - Fronts still have about 1/2 their thickness left. Rear calipers checked out OK and side-to-side wear was consistent.

I'm not buying TRD pads again. They squeak like crazy and also dust like no other pad I've used. Stock or PowerStop for me (will be trying PowerStop vented rotors when I swap the fronts)...

Mine has 45k miles and those exact same dimensions. I know the brake pads on the 4Runners are very easy to replace but I was told (by the dealer) I should resurface the rotors first. Do you think I can get away with just replacing the pads if I don't see any gouging or rotor warping?

I offroad a bit and use atrac often. It causes quite some wear on the pads. I replaced rear at 40k and front at 45k. I was shocked the rear went out before the front.... first time I've ever seen this.
You see the same on Jeep JK'S with the BLD system. Rears are just about always done first.

Yes but it'll usually also cause faster wear on the pads. Find a shop that'll machine for you at a reasonable price.

Wow, I had about 2-3mm left when I changed at 31K, not sure how anyone is getting 80K!!!

That is what I was about to say. I replaced fronts and rears before the 40K mark. You guys getting 80k must have a very soft foot for this heavy a** truck

Simple, don't use them.
Mine still looked brand new when I checked last month at 80K. I cleaned the pins.

That's Amazing!

I would get 60-80K out of my BMW 330xi, and got 50K out of each of my set's on my C5, and the Vette saw track time.

I was shocked when I pulled the wheel and checked on the 4Runner.

How would not resurfacing a rotor that is in decent condition wear new pads faster? I've never heard of this in my 20 yrs as a technician... Yes standard and most ideal procedure in a brake job includes resurfacing the rotors, however, if you are a do it yourselfer and the rotors are in good condition (no serious grooves and no brake pulsation indicating that the rotors are warped) just get some medium grit sand paper and scuff the surface of both sides of the rotor to remove the glaze/shiny surface then replace the pads. No premature aware of the pads.

Just what I heard. Retracted :caked:

It should be a necessity for anyone, every time they change their brake pads. Plus, how much extra time does it really take?
Mine were pretty corroded as you can see from the "after" pic but I didn't try THAT hard like taking a wire wheel to them.
I did just buy an ACDelco brake kit on Amazon with new pins and springs. I haven't installed so I can't confirm if they are exact replacements.

A little steel wool and/or a quick soak in brake cleaner/brake fluid is good enough for me and my vehicles
