They don't HAVE to be bled but that's the only way to get the fluid out. The only other way to do it is to flush all the fluid out through the bleeders which takes forever.

On my '85, I installed a t100 booster, 1" bore MC, blocked the LSPV at the T in the front wheel well, and added a summit racing proportioning valve (kit from FROR). Paired with my V6 calipers, FJ rotors, and completely rebuilt rear drums, I can lock up my 37's on pavement.
Luckily you can move all of that to your 87 and just swap the front rotors to a 90-95 rotor.
Yes, I will be swapping everything over and rebuilding the brakes on the '87 rear axle. Not sure what you mean about the rotors, I'm going to keep the FJ vented rotors I currently have on the axle.
