Today had some grey weather so I figured I try out the 4HI system from 2H. Engaged 4H system, easy with no problem but driving around its stiff n hard steering when cornering slow (like slow driving around a parking lot tonight) and it feels like its stiff also after turning slow and slightly pressing the gas like it was rubbing somewhere??

I'm hoping someone will chime in and say its growing pains?(like it needs to be broken in for a few miles) Maybe the systems needs to be used and settles in as it is being used more?

It's almost like the 4R is driving like its in 4LO but I know I had the shifter in 4H ( trail uses a manual physical shifter- just saying, I know most of you may know this.

I said to my self no mods for at least a year (BULLLLSHIIIII) and I'm already planning on swapping the headlight bulbs for a brighter light for night/multi state driving and new shoes(Duratrac's or BFG AT- wife loves the BFG, I love the Dura, had both, like the quieter ride of the dura's. Edit- oh and maybe spidertrax spacers.

Oh and maybe a small amp, if I can mate it easily to stock system.

can 275's fit without any lift?? If not, whats the minimum lift space needed to have them fit( half or one inch spacers?)

The problem is "Too much friction."

It really has been discussed a lot on here, but mostly by idiots.:police:
 
Oh man please, please search using part time 4WD on pavement and making slow tight corners. That has to be one of the most discussed topics on this forum. Please do a bit of research and then come back with questions. Also read the new or prospective owner thread. All your answers are there.

Sounds like the first thing you are talking about is "binding". When the center differential is locked all wheels are turing at the same rate, this is a big no-no when there is nothing for the wheels to slip on like dry pavement, or wet but no slippage. This is why the owners manual tells us not to engage 4wd on dry pavement. It shouldn't be an issue done once or twice but I wouldn't go try it out again. This is one of the thing that does suck if you're trying to find a parking spot in 4wd in a snow covered parking lot (which is why a lot of the members here in Snowy areas will get a Limited with full time 4wd instead of a trail or SR5 with part-time 4wd). Poor guy was probably just used to the AWD mode in his '08 and didn't realize. I know I almost made the same mistake coming from my '01. I'll miss AWD mode I think.

I thought I bought a truck, apparently I bought MAD MAX vehicle! Hell now I DEF DON'T want to do a lot of mods. Jesus SHE is a beast!!!

NOW I see why people posted changing tires very fast, the whole system is WAY above and beyond these stock tires, I DEF MUST change that- awe crap I'm spending....

YEP! And the old 08 SR5 ran over anything in front of her with only center diff lock. This Trail will eat the same and much more and spit it out apparently!

Bottom line: With part time 4WD do not do low speed turns with 4WD engaged on dry pavement . Long sweeping turns are fine as is straight line driving. Just like your owner's manual says.
Why? In 4WD the front and rear wheels are locked together and when you make a turn, especially a sharp turn, the turning radius is different from front to back. This means something has to give and that something is your tire being scrubbed on the pavement. Will it damage anything? Probably not but it is not the best way to treat the drivetrain.
Read your manual, do some research here and then come back and ask.

A 'rule' I've read is don't do any turns that you can't make below 30mph on dry pavement, and you should be fine.

Thank you. I knew this info but was unaware of it being in the Trail. Now, having (partly) reviewed the manual 4wd operating section, I know now 4H shes a beast and that is her in beast mode!

A 4th gen guy not talking about how much better his 4th was? Seriously, get your shit together guys. Has everyone lost their will to fight or have we finally seen the day when the older gen admits that the new one is at least "decent"? Reminds me teaching my father in law to use a debit card....Yeah, this plastic thing is the same as a paper check....no you don't pay interest....the money comes from your bank account...they don't accept checks here.....(me sitting at a restaurant waiting for the server to take the -signed- receipt so no one "steals" the tip)........AHHHH. Worth it in the end though. Sorry, not sure where I was going with this.....My rule of thumb: If I did not slip, or walk through a large amount of snow on the way to the vehicle, I probably don't need 4WD.
