break pad need to be replaced?

My 4R is 2010 limited and I bought in Apr 2011 as new. Currently put on 68,000km. When I went for the 65k oil change and service, dealer told me the rear break pad was 20% left. and it needs to be replaced. I quote the price: $380. This includes resurface rotor.

This is just for rear break. I did same thing for front about same price when 55,000km.

My question is, do anybody spend around $800 to service the breaks in 3 years not that crazy use?

This is my 4th brand new vehicles and none of my previous 3 (Saturn, Suziki and Jeep) had such problem. They are much cheaper to service the breaks and take much longer to worn out.

Most here average a minimum of 115,000 km before pads are needed and the price is nowhere near what you are paying. My advice? find a new place.

Although I'm in the US and not Canada, I'm pretty sure the cost of brake pads are not that much higher there than here!

I just looked up 2011 pads for my sr5 and they are 27 bucks plus shipping from RockAuto--these are for Raybestos Element3 pads with hardware for the rear!

Resurfacing rotors at most parts stores is around $25.00 each around my area, so in all, parts and resurfacing rotors for the rear would be around 100 bucks (with shipping, a can of brake clean and some anti squeal paste). This should be a very, very simple job to do on a weekend!

Of course, if you want someone else to do the work for you, I'd figure a max of 2 hours labor (usually around $100/hr here), you'd be around 300 bucks to do the rear.

So, for $380 to have them do the rear pads, it doesn't seem too crazy, but you might find a cheaper place to get them done. Remember too, the cheaper places may not use good pads, I sourced Raybestos because they are a solid brand that I've been using for many years (along with porterfield and even Akebono). If they go cheap, you could end up with "valuecraft" pads that cost 7 bucks at rockauto.com! Not sure I would trust the brakes with 7 dollar pads in a 40+ grand vehicle!

Have them show you the brake pads compared to a new brake pad so you can see the difference between a new one and one with 20% left.

Then if you're not comfortable with the price they're quoting you, call around and ask other shops what they would charge so you can get a comparison.

I bought mine used at 44,000 miles. According to the documentation the front and rear brakes were at the end of their life and were replaced (rotors as well). I just did the 60,000 mile service and I will definitely be replacing the rear pads by the 70,000 mile service.

I will do the service myself so I have no idea on how much a dealer would charge.

are these prices in Canadian dollars

We bought our 2010 4Runner new and I just replaced the rear pads and rotors last weekend at 76,000 miles. Passenger side interior pad was more than 100% used and I really put it off too long as they were starting to grind.

There was some pretty significant brake pulsating the last many thousand miles that I was certain was from a front rotor but it has now disappeared with the rear rotor replacement.

That being said, 68,000 km seems a bit soon based on my experience.

I'm in Calgary as well, My last vehicle had front and back pads and rotors replaced @ 68k Kms, then the fronts were done again at 125k kms. The cost for just the fronts was about $675, this was an Audi though.

Generally (as I'm sure you know) prices of most things in Calgary are a little more than other places - I assume those prices were Canadian dollars. It doesn't sound crazy to me though that your rears would need to be replaced after your fronts recently were. Everyone has a different driving style and brake wear varies a lot from person to person.

That's pretty standard dealership pricing for Calgary. There may be other places in town that charge less if you aren't set on bringing it to one of the dealerships though.

my 06 has just over 100k miles, and its just now needing brakes. I would be really surprised if yours is needing them at half that mileage.

I'm all for giving someone a break, but for heaven's sake it's BRAKES.

Rear brakes in 42,000 miles, something's not adding up correctly!

I dont know that it is so crazy. I did mine @ 30,000 when there was 2 mm left on each side (even wear). I did not own the vehicle the first 28 K miles so I dont know the driving style of the previous owner but from all other accounts the vehicle was treated well.

It is pretty crazy...
We had a poll awhile back and the AVERAGE for pads was 70,000 miles and many (including me) were still in good shape at 70K. There was also a discussion on replacement pads and the general consensus was to just go back to stock! They last a long time, they perform extremely well and they are cheap.

I would agree on replacing the brake pads with OEM. Over the years I have tried several different options and never have as good of results with anything as I do with OEM.

Whatever you do don't let someone talk you into cramic pads, they may last a bit longer but they tend to eat rotors.

Unfortunately, that's the trade-off for having great braking power with ceramic pads. Of course, its overkill for a stock 4 Runner, as the rotors are sized well, and I'm pretty sure nobody is running their 4 runner as a track vehicle on the weekends!

While we're on the subject of what pads to not have, never, EVER, buy organic pads! They are the filthiest pads I've ever had the displeasure to have installed on a vehicle! I swear, it took 3 times as long to scrub the dust off the rims!

I replaced rear pads and rotors at 88,000 km, cost me a little bit over $400 but with tire rotation and oil change in dealership. Front pads are still original (got 97,000 km now). So I guess you're not far off, I probably didn't use brakes as often, brakes have been invented by cowards : )

i don't think that's true.

also, according to my system: OE Pad Material Is Ceramic.
