Breather Install

I just did the mod today and there is no worry about gas getting in. Just look at the photos. You can put the breather back in the left corner away from the cap and well above the bottom of the door opening.

I was afraid of it getting gas into the line, and I read another thread where the breather was placed next to the gas fill tube, and it did not operate correctly because the cap was lodged against the tube as well. So, I ran mine up through the back light area and then into my storage area that holds the jack and tool kit. I found a rubber gasket that goes into this area from under the truck and cut a hole in it just a little smaller than my tubing, so that it was water tight when installed. I know that this is a little more tubing, but it's a lot cleaner in both looks and dirt, plus the wife won't bitch about you drilling holes into the truck every chance she gets. If I ever get enough water in that thing to get to the vent, then I've got bigger problems on my hands then worrying about the dif.

It was a fun and easy mod, and cheap to.

Gotta be ID. I ran out and put the vernier over the OD and mine was 0.6 inches.

By the way, I recycled my original breather cap I didn't like the new one much. I have been meaning to post it for sale.

When I did my diff breather extension I put it in the left rear taillight housing. That was a pretty easy spot to locate it as well. Thanks for the pics and part #'s it made it really easy.

So I went to an auto parts store and asked for 6 ft. of 5/16" fuel line, the guy asked me if I wanted fuel line for fuel injected cars or for non-fuel injected cars. The fuel-injected version is more expensive, but can withstand higher pressures. The regular fuel line says 50 PSI on it. Which one should I go with?

Use the cheap one. Remember, the idea is to vent the air so 1 PSI is even too much.

THE Breather mod is prettyy simple for the 2nd gen , i have a 95 runner , and it took me about 10 mins. to do it

I have a 4gen(08) and I can't find the second breather next to the engine, either.

Anyway, I paid $5.63 for the Union and $2.68 for the breather online from a Michigan dealer. I got ttwo just in case I have to do the front diff too.

Right can I ask a potential stupid question here too...

I thought the idea with diff breathers was to allow the diff to breathe "IN" during water crossings - the theory being:

You're banging along and your diff is warm/hot (depending on how much of a hard time it's getting from ya!) then you come to a (Brrrr) cold stream and in you go... Now the diff gets a cold bath, this causes the "reverse" of the "hot gas venting" effect ie. the inside of the diff cools and contracts, and you get water into the diff because

a) the factory breather is underwater

and / or

b) the breather is "one-way" and slams shut, but the laws of physics win and pressure sucks water in through the axle seals.

THE POINT TO ALL THIS - if you fit the original "one-way" breather to the end of the extension and mount it higher up, you haven't really done the full job?

Yes or no? I'm asking not telling!

Shouldn't the end of the extension be doubled over and fitted with a bit of screen or a "two-way" filter etc.

Have now read the other THREE pages too!!

Seems that someone ran a tee off their newly installed diff breather line, and fitted a "cone"(?) filter. Also, the part number quoted is for a cap that IS different to the original breather plug. Different HOW - in appearance or in operation (ie. two-way not one-way)?

Sorry if I'm over complicating things!

I just did my breather mod this morning using both of the parts that have been listed several times. The breather was diff but a breather is a breather right? anyway I just ran mine up to the gas filler but didn't poke it through like some I just secured it to the fuel line running down to the tank. So if I ever trade it in Nobody is asking any crazy questions about the breather sticking through the gas door.

Something else to think about...at least in the 4th gen 4runners, there are 1 to 2 breather tubes in the engine bay, on the driver's side of the engine block. If you have a V6, then you should have 2 breather tubes (with silver caps). If you have a V8, then you should have only one. The transmission and transfer case do NOT have breather extension. They have breather caps just like the rear axle. So, Toyota only extended the front differential...the other stuff is for your weekend projects!

I would highly recommend the above mod(s) if you go off-roading a lot or do mudding/river crossings.

I check my cap each time I get gas. I wouldn't be able to do that is it's tucked in my rear light cavity.

But, why do you need to check it so often?? Since either location is away from mud/water, there is no need to check it much at all. Do you check the breathers for your front diff, transfer case, and auto tranny everytime you put gas in your truck?

I just don't like the gas cap location much because one can spill gasoline on the area often (i almost inevitably spill gasoline around the area everytime i put gas in my cars)...although this may not damage anything, but i wonder if the gasoline may rot the plastic tube over the long haul????
