I just did the mod today and there is no worry about gas getting in. Just look at the photos. You can put the breather back in the left corner away from the cap and well above the bottom of the door opening.

So, I ran mine up through the back light area and then into my storage area that holds the jack and tool kit. I found a rubber gasket that goes into this area from under the truck and cut a hole in it just a little smaller than my tubing, so that it was water tight when installed. I know that this is a little more tubing, but it's a lot cleaner in both looks and dirt, plus the wife won't bitch about you drilling holes into the truck every chance she gets. If I ever get enough water in that thing to get to the vent, then I've got bigger problems on my hands then worrying about the dif.
It was a fun and easy mod, and cheap to.
