Open your hood. Stand on the drivers side mid-span of your fender. Peer in engine bay ... about 1 foot in, between engine and the brake fluid compartment (I think), you should see the same device sticking up.

I did the install the other night. Simple and straitght forward. You'll find the other two breathers on the drivers side by the battery. Look for the silver caps, it's there...

I did this mod to my truck with a few minor differences, so I'll throw in my two cents.
Upon removing the breather from my rear differential, a hissing sound (not unlike that of a bottle of soda being opened slowly) and a whole bunch of gunk ground off into my eyes (looking up, being directly under my work area, not wearing glasses, and doing it at night while trying to hold a flashlight would maximize the hilarity of this story, but I'd like to save my dignity so we'll leave that part out.)
Instead of using a modified nipple (haha... nipple) to connect the hose to the differential, I went to my dealership and got a replacement and used a screwdriver and plyers to rip the breather's cap off, leaving the necessary room to attach the hose and clamp it down.
Also, instead of using another stock breather at the breathing end of the hose, I used a small fuel filter (Fram G3 generic) and just zip-tied it on the backside of the fuel spout. I saw this filter used in another mod guide and figured that would work better (still looks cool too).
What my advice to people would be is to make sure that your new breather hose DOES NOT touch the exhaust!!! (smells bad and you have to buy more hose) Find another zip-tie attachment point (brake line probably not the best idea either; use your judgement, and ask someone here if your not sure) and make sure that you still have enough slack to compensate for travel during articulation, or the hose will get ripped off on your first bump (and we don't want that do we).
Like the other people said, this is mostly just a profilactic and doesn't give you any acute benifits, but I still believe that a quick and inexpensive mod like this, which gives you the chance to work on your own ride, makes you feel likes the car is more yours and you get the expierence of wrenching (something I find theraputic).
Very easy to do, takes very little time, very little money, and can prevent problems that might occur down the trail.

I was afraid of it getting gas into the line, and I read another thread where the breather was placed next to the gas fill tube, and it did not operate correctly because the cap was lodged against the tube as well. So, I ran mine up through the back light area and then into my storage area that holds the jack and tool kit. I found a rubber gasket that goes into this area from under the truck and cut a hole in it just a little smaller than my tubing, so that it was water tight when installed. I know that this is a little more tubing, but it's a lot cleaner in both looks and dirt, plus the wife won't bitch about you drilling holes into the truck every chance she gets. If I ever get enough water in that thing to get to the vent, then I've got bigger problems on my hands then worrying about the dif.

New Breather Valve Faulty?
I got my breather from Toyota and the metal cap on top does not move freely like the others??? You actually have to pull on it to open and then puch it back to close or it just sticks. Also, air flows both ways through it.....Is this normal?
One other thing, it is only 5/16 instead of 3/8 where the hose should connect; not a tight fit at all. I would think I have the wrong one.

Dude, if the cap is jammed then it doesn't matter if I'm in water or on the highway, it still won't work. Where I have it now is clean in looks (the wife doesn't even realize that I made the mod, which is always a good thing!) and dirt, and if water ever gets that deep, then I'm in more trouble than that breather is going to get me out of.

I agree with you in that the wife won't know and your location is a good one.
Still, I don't expect any issues with the location I chose as the cap is higher than the gas tank nozzle so any spillage will go down, and it's mounted in such a way that the cap moves freely and unobstructed. Dirt is also not a concern since inside the gas cover is 100% cleaner that on top of the diff, the original location.
Puzzled and curious full-serve gas attendants are told that it's a sensor for would be gas thieves.

Hmmmmm....I bought the breather listed above which is different from the stock breather. Firstly it's all plastic (except the cap), secondly it doesn't have a valve and third the cap is very tight and doesn't move like the stock breather cap.
Questions
1. Is your breather plastic?
2. If so does it incorporate a valve?
3. Is the plastic cap very tight - eg it does not move up or down?
4. Why didn't you guys just use the stock valve that you had removed from the diff originally?

4. Because that cap is designed to jiggle. When it stops jiggling, the "valve" is closed preventing anything in or out. The plastic cap is always open. I sucked and blew through the plastic part, and, although there was resistance, air did go in and out.
I did this on a 3rd Gen. On the 3G, the gas filler cap rubber surround has a tiny hole in it. I stuck the nipple side of the breather through that, adn stuck the hose on the nipple on the other side of the surround. SO all you see is the silver metal cap. No hose clamp, nothing else.
What I also did, as a failsafe, was T the line near the gas cap, and put a breather filter (from Ariba Zone, looks like a miniature cone filter) on the branch of the T. So, I have two breathers.
One thing concerns me. I was fooling around in the engine bay, and I say there was a hose just flopping around. Picked it up, and it a breather hose. Not sure if its front diff or xfer case. Cant find the other one though.

Just did the install. Thanks for all the pic.s. Made it go soooo easy. Still gotta find the second breather under the hood though. I am only seeing one and can't figure out what if it belongs to the transmission or front dif.o The search continues. But for now,...to find some muddy water! The rain from last night should help.

Another good thing to remember is that the cap will open when it gets too hot to release preasure, but it opens as well. It will open when you enter cold water to equalize the preasure, and suck water into the cap, and in turn, the axle. I used the coiled air hose that come with some compressors to do mine, and I routed the lines into the cab. One throught the firewall, the other into the back through a hole with a sealed gromet. This is on a first gen.
