Haven't been doing much with the 4runner lately. After having the motor rebuilt (which they f'd up pretty good) about a year and a half ago, I've had nothing but problems with the motor and the runner has been more of a headache to me than anything lately. I got most of my money back from the chinsy shop over a year ago, but sadly, it has just been sitting in my driveway leaking oil and missing for a few months now. I miss my 4runner and going wheelin, so it's time for a new motor!

I'm constantly running on 5 cylinders now. I ruled out electrical and fuel, it's definitely a problem with the head and now I also hear a loud tick over that cyl. I figure since it's already been rebuilt crappily once, the rear main seal still leaks off and on, and now it's missing all the time, it's finally time to just scrap this motor.

I bought a good ~127K used engine about a year ago for a great deal and I finally picked it up from Driffter33. I've been lagging on it because at first I thought maybe I could suck a couple more years out of the current motor, but it has only gotten worse and worse. And I don't think it's worth trying to ever repair since even if I put a new head on it and a new rear main seal, I don't trust the shop did a good job on the rest of it. So it's just a matter of time until the whole thing grenades I think, lol.

I wanted to try to do the swap myself, but I just can't find the time in the next month or so and I want my 4runner before the snow (which could come any time now). So I made an appt this monday at Yotamasters in Corona for the swap. They come highly recommended, they specialize in Toyota trucks and they were actually the cheapest I could find to do it at $850. I'm getting pumped to have the old beast back again!!

Nice to see an update to this thread. Good luck with the new motor, but you're missing a black or tan thing on top of that motor...

The engine swap has begun! Dropped the 4runner off and the donor motor yesterday, should be ready sometime this week!! I have to say, Eric at Yotamasters has been a pleasure to do business with and I highly recommend his shop if you're in SoCal. It was pretty cool to pull up to a mechanic and see nothing but lifted 4runners parked outside!

Congrats Brian! If my motor ever gives out I will be doing the same. I love my runner too much to get rid of :D

Good to hear! Was wondering why I hadn't seen any updates in a while...surprised you didn't start moding the taco lol

X2 - Brian, good to hear an update from you. And, will probably be doing an engine swap versus rebuild if/when the time comes.

Looking forward to getting an update from you once the swap is done!

Thanks guys. I can't wait to get it back and wheel it again!
Mauzer, the taco would make a great trail rig no doubt, but I like the gas mileage with my little 29" tires too much - I get about 23 avg in it (as opposed to about 14 in the 4runner).

I understand, I have a second 3rd gen that I've been trying to hold off on lifting b/c it gets better mileage on road trips then my junk. But if my rig was down and I had spare parts I would def be tempted to do some "light" wheeling in it, lol.

Actually the gf and I did a little "light" wheeling on Sunday in the taco! I took her out to the woods to go shoot my .22 and I found myself on a few rough sections of the trail, but the little taco handled it great!

Glad to hear you'll be back on the road again soon. $850 seems like a great price.

.

Thanks B, yeah I think $850 is a great price too, especially at a shop that does Toyotas pretty much exclusively. All said and done the entire swap cost about $1350 including the donor, and not to mention the donor came with everything (sensors, alt, starter, ps pump, a/c pump, etc..) so I have a lot of spare parts for down the road. I even got a 2wd tranny with it, which I intend on selling when I get around to it. I also have a URD 6 injector kit with the ECM cuz the donor was SC'ed. I think those alone sell for almost a grand new. Probably not going to SC anytime soon (spent all my money) so I'll probably sell that too.

So I got my truck back this week with the donor motor installed and there's good news and bad news.

The bad news..
The engine seemed to run fine, but started missing again after a few minutes. Uuuuuuggggghhhh! It's still missing on cyl. #4 like it was on the old motor, and I tried swapping coils, changing the plug and putting a new wire on that cyl, and I even changed out the igniter before the swap. So it must be a bad injector (even though I tested that before the swap too). The injector must just go in and out randomly (or leak) and it tested fine at that particular time. So that sucks!

The mechanic said he was sure that each injector stayed in the same position on the new motor so since it's missing on the same cylinder and everything else has been ruled out, it has to be the injector (or the very, very unlikely chance that the donor motor has a problem with the same cylinder and exhibits the identical symptoms). I think the chances of that are extremely slim, so I'm gonna swap the injector out on Monday and that should take care of the miss in the new motor.

The good...
It would seem now that the engine swap was all for nothing and it was just a stupid injector this whole time, but the rear main seal still leaked on the old engine and that would have cost almost as much as what I paid for the engine swap anyways. The good part is, besides the rear main (which is very cheap to fix now that the engine is out of the truck), there's nothing wrong with the old motor.

I just figured the rebuild shop did a crappy job and I lost faith in that motor because I had other issues like the rear main and I had to have the valves re-adjusted because they were stating to tick after a couple thousand miles. I got most of my money back from the rebuild and even though I now know there isn't anything wrong with that motor, I don't feel bad about getting the refund because I still had multiple problems and that still cost me a ton of time, headaches, and gas driving back there a bunch of times. Now that I know there's nothing wrong with the rebuild, I can sell that motor and get most of the money I spent on the swap back.

In the end, I think I'll just about break even on this whole thing. If everything would have been fine with the donor motor (no missing), I was just going to scrap the old motor assuming it had head/valve issues. But, now that I know it was just the fuel injector, the old motor isn't scrap anymore. In fact, it's freshly rebuilt with only 12K miles on it, so I have no reason to think that whoever buys it won't get 200K miles out of it with good maintenance!

So if anyone knows someone around California who needs a 3.4, let me know and I'll give them a great deal. I'll probably put it in the classifieds on here and maybe craigslist too. I think I'll ask $1000 OBO for it.

Oh, and on a side note..
My 4x4 dash light doesn't come on anymore since the engine swap. The 4wd still works (I went out and tested it last night - got it stuck in 2wd and shifted into 4hi and crawled right out), but just no dash light. I really doubt the bulb just happened to burn out during the engine swap, so I'll bet they probably just forgot to plug a wire back in. I know they'll fix it for free, but it's a long drive from my house so if anyone knows what it is, I'd like to just fix it myself if it's something easy.

All in all, I just hope I can enjoy the 4runner again and not have to deal with anymore problems for a good long time!

Did you check the little connector above the front diff? That would be the first place I would look. You can get to it pretty easily from the driver side fender, at least when the tire is off. Glad things are going well for ya.

Glad you have the rig back Brian.

I'm debating on rather to rebuild mine or not. The engine has 267k and its due for the timing belt/water pump job. Should I just pony up the change or would the timing belt/water pump be suffice?

Thanks man. That's a tough call with the high mileage. It could run fine to up 300 or 400K, but it could also start having problems sooner. I think if it runs good, I would probably just do the TB/WP. With that high of mileage though, I would be tempted to not do anything since these are non-interference motors anyways so if the timing belt breaks, the valves won't get damaged. As long as it isn't getting hot, you know the WP is working.
