Thanks man. That's a tough call with the high mileage. It could run fine to up 300 or 400K, but it could also start having problems sooner. I think if it runs good, I would probably just do the TB/WP. With that high of mileage though, I would be tempted to not do anything since these are non-interference motors anyways so if the timing belt breaks, the valves won't get damaged. As long as it isn't getting hot, you know the WP is working.

She is doing pretty good so far..

The temperature is within specs.

Aside from the timing belt, I would like to also change the inner/outer tie rods, lower/upper ball joints just to be safe.. Change out all the fluids and have it go another 200k..

I found why the 4x4 light wasn't working.. the wire going to the diff had a broken clip. It was the same wire that Stockwell mentioned, but the bad connector was the other side of the wire (passenger) where it clips into the ADD actuator on the diff. The engine swap shop said they would get me a new one. All in all, the 4runner is running very good!

Thanks Bryan! I'm stoked, the truck runs and sounds better than it has in years! It's kind of like having my old friend back. I'm so ready to hit the trails again and it may even snow here this weekend! Got it running just in time to pass my smog check for reg too.

Had an awesome day snow wheeling yesterday in Big Bear with Driffter33 and a couple of his buddies. We did 2 recoveries while we were on the trails.. first a 2wd Ford Ranger stuck in about a foot of snow (Driffter pulled him a few hundred yards to a sunny spot where the snow had melted and we took off). Then we came upon a 4wd Jeep that slid off the trail and was about to slide off into a ravine if he went any further. Driffter tried to pull him out, but couldn't get enough traction on the snow, so I hooked the strap up to driffter and we yanked the Jeep out together..

^^Those guys were lucky we came along because we hadn't seen another soul on that trail all day and never saw anyone else for the other 2 hours we were on the trail after we pulled them out. Needless to say, they would have had a very chilly night with wet feet, or a very long walk back to civilization the next day. Lucky for them we are some pretty nice friggin guys! I never miss the opportunity to pull a Jeep out with my Toyota!

Do I see winch on the jeep? Oh, well looked like fun. I can't wait to get my runner back from my mom (her van is dead). I am up in Arrowhead about 3 to 4 times a week. Once I get it back and do a few things to it, we'll have meet up and do some wheeling.

Yeah, the Jeep had a winch but I looked and there wasn't any trees on the other side of the trail that would have been at the right angle and within reach of the cable. He may have been able to rig something up without us, but it wouldn't have been easy.

Cool, I'm down to meet up and wheel!

I like how the CBI and tire setup fills the whole tail of it..so nice. Are you sticking with this setup again, since your last post concerning the entire weight of the rear making your truck feel tippy up front when climbing up or something?

Yours and Jay's truck should be making it in the issues of the 4WD magazines just like your buddy Jason.

Thanks man, lol. Yeah, it does make it somewhat tippier when I'm climbing rock faces, but I hate having the spare in the back and I'm getting pretty used to the way it handles now. I plan to just run some limit straps in the back too. Jason put some on his truck, and he says they make the truck feel a lot more stable. So I'm hoping those, along with the weight of a winch up front someday will make it feel a little more stable.

Our trucks are definitely as built as Jason's, but he deserves a few magazine features if not for his skills alone. He is really pushing the envelope for what these trucks can do and I would have to say, I've never met anyone who can pick lines so perfectly and consistently as Jason - on trails that I wouldn't have touched a couple years ago (and some that I still won't, lol!). The guy almost never uses a spotter too. That kid can wheel!

Just curious, what kind of city/highway gas mileage do you get out of your rig? I've always wondered how much it really affects gas mileage to go from stock to fully armored and locked on 35's.

Thanks man! I get about 15 on the freeways and highways, and I average about 13 combined (and that's adding 18% back into my odometer to account for the bigger tires). So when my odo says I went 100 miles, I really went 118 or so. Lately I just drive in the snow around town, camp with it, and 4wheel it.. and on those tanks I get about 11-12 mpgs. When it was stock, I used to get about 21 freeway and 18-19 combined, so all the mods have definitely made a difference.

All in all, the gas mileage sucks on the 4runner now, but it's still not as bad as most of my friends' Jeeps. And the gas mileage is fine for a snow/wheeling/camping rig. I bought my little regular cab Tacoma 4cyl about a year ago for my DD and I get about 22-23 mpgs in that one.

Thats not too bad. I'm currently getting around 17 mpg combined with 32" guard dogs and a tundra/lc lift. It's my daily driver though so I may have to stick with "mpg-friendly" mods for now and hold off on the 35's and heavy armor
