so how does your truck ride with the CBI and tire on the back? Any sag/bounce? How heavy is the whole assembly, approx.? I'm unsure if I should go for the swing away or just leave the tire on the roof...
What springs are you running out back?

I have OME 891s with (2) 10mm trim packers on top of each coil (+20mm) and it rides like a caddy. The CBI with the spare and Hi-lift back there sagged my 891s ~.75" from where it was with the stock bumper. So the 20mms of trim packers put me back up to where I was before the bumper. I couldn't weigh it because it's so huge, but I'd have to guess it's ~175 lbs. without the tire.

You'll save probably 40-50 lbs. by not having the swing-away, but IMO it's well worth it to get that heavy spare of your roof. You'll have a lot less body roll on those off-camber sections with the tire on the back rather than on the roof.

The swing-away is really nice to have. Besides getting the tire off the roof (where it's a lot more difficult to access and to lift up there, carrying a Hi-lift inside will almost surely put holes in your interior panels after a while. I got mine with a gas tank holder too, but I don't want my gas to get stolen so I carry that inside and I'm going to be making that area into an icebox holder very soon so stay tuned...

The ice box holder is made! Big thanks to Jason (J-money$$$) for making it for me. It bolts to the same mounts as my gas can holder. I'll get some pics in a few days with it installed, but I still need to paint it first.

Little update...
My engine finally started missing really bad lately (kind of a long time in the making) and t ended up being burnt (or badly mis-adjusted) valves on #3 and #5. I also have a small HG leak into the combustion chamber (which I diagnsed by pulling the spark plugs overnight and seeing coolant in there in the morning). The cost of a valve job or a HG job on their own are almost as much as a full rebuild, so I just bit the bullet and went for it!

If all goes to plan, I will have her back by the end of the week with a newly rebuilt engine ready to go for at least another 205K!! I could have just done the valves and HGs, but I figured with my luck I would spin a rod bearing, or have ring issues, or something else in the not-so-distance future so it was a better choice to just start fresh with a clean slate.

I should be picking it back up Friday and then hopefully on Saturday I'll install my new and improved rear lower links that J-money$$$ and I have been working on for several months (we already finished my uppers and those are installed and working wonderfully). I also have some new OME 861 rear coils to install! OME makes them as small lift coils for an FJZ80 so they are basically like 9 wraps but will support more weight. It's going to be like a new truck!! Pics of the new links and lift to come soon...

On a side note, I was also planning on selling my DD (an '05 Honda CR-V) and maybe buying a little 4-banger, 4x4, manual, standard cab Taco for a new DD because it would be more useful to me than a CR-V. But knowing that the 4runner will be like a new truck again in a few days, I'm leaning towards just slapping my front sway bar back on and driving the 4runner as my DD again. So I think I'm takin it out of retirement for now baby! So from now on, you may call my 4runner "Favre". I'll get to keep about 1/2 of the $$ I get for my Honda after I pay off the loan so I may even splurge a little bit for "Favre" and get a couple little things... like a winch, exhaust, and maybe some rock lights.

Be careful how you name your rig. You may pull up next to a pretty young 4th gen and "Favre" will disconnect his drive shaft and let it flop on the ground in front of the 4th gen...

With an engine rebuild you should sell the honda and buy SUPERCHARGER!!! :bigok:

ROTFL!!

I know, that would be so sweet. Then I can keep up with Driffter's! I'm actually thinking about that, but hell, I'll just be happy to get stock power back for now. On my last tank of gas, I calculated 8.13 mpgs and the last time I drove up the mountain I only got up to ~40 mph where I normally do ~60.

i literally lol'd...

sorry to hear about you engine, but on the bright side when you get it back it will be as good as new! by the way, i think your 4runner is sick, pretty close to my 'ideal' 4runner.

Thanks, it's pretty close to my ideal 4runner too! Not quite there yet though..

Jason's been really busy! I'm actually glad the engine finally started running so awful because it has ran sorta crappy off and on for the last couple years now and at least I can be done with it and hopefully have a dependable truck again. My mpgs took a sudden turn from ~15 to 8 in a week.

I'm stoked on the 861s, It'll be nice to have a little cushion for the pushin back there. :)
