Brian2sun Build Thread

I took my skid plate off to do my inner TREs tomorrow. Snapped a pic..
You can't say I don't get some use outta this thing!

The oil stains are because my rear main went out for the 2nd time after the engine got rebuilt back in February. I ended up getting a refund for my engine rebuild (after I had to threaten to get "my" attorney involved - who doesn't exist BTW). I didn't get all of the money back, but I got ~80% back and avoided having to go to court over it so I took it and ran!

Good news is, I have a '97 3.4 waiting to be swapped in which a good friend (and member on here) is going to sell me for a great price! The motor is in great shape, relatively low mileage and it's got the fuel upgrades for a SC already (URD 6 injector kit and URD computer)!

That sucks about the engine. I'm glad to hear you got a semi-refund and have another ready to go!

With the URD computer, it isn't going to mess anything up is it? Being programmed for a forced induction engine and all..

No I'm gonna use my stock computer, intake and fuel injectors out of my current motor until I save up enough to buy a SC. I'll just have the URD stuff ready to go when I need it.

You're a tease! BTW...I vote GUNMETAL! he he he! Those should look good too though!

I know, haha! Hopefully I'll be rolling on these things by the end of the week if I can find the time to get it aligned first.

Dude, those wheels and tires look amazing. Leave them silver! It'll look best on your white truck. Glad you got a good deal on the Coopers.

I am horribly curious how ponderously slow your truck will feel after they are on. I guess you have gears though. But still. A supercharger looks REALLY good at this point...

Thanks man, I'll at least leave em silver for a while. Maybe for good.

I think the SC will be a must in the next several months, but I'm hoping it'll be bearable for a while so I can save up enough $$ for a decent used one.

Right now I have steel wheels and 255s. I think the new alloy 5 stars and 315s will end up weighing about the same as what I have now. So I'm hoping going back to alloys will split the difference and I won't loose as much power. But we'll see..

As it is right now, if I didn't live in the mountains where I'm climbing hills all the time, I probably wouldn't even bother SCing it. But I need a SC more than most people would since I live at high elevation and have a heavy truck with 35s. I think I picked the perfect gear ratio in the end though (4.88), once it's SCed.

I'm thinking a SC would probably improve my MPGs too (which average ~15-16 now) because it won't lug at all.

Hey Brian,

Sorry to hear about your motor.

Friend of my had it happened on his rover and is been 5 seals and it still leaks.

But none the less, sweet rig. Hopefully one of these days I will have the mods on mine.

T4r4life,

Link it yo. I might get my runner a little x-mas present.

I say leave them silver. I did gunmetal and didn't like it. I'm repainting them now. Obviously you have a different color combo so it may look ok, but if you like silver stick with them.

Brian,
Bummer news on the motor...looks like you are going to do what you do; make it rain!

I am on the fence on the SC, just because it seems as though it will put a ton of stress on an engine that normally lasts a very long time. However, looking at that psi gauge pin and pulling past some V8's would be something I would love!

I look forward to seeing this project!!

I'll be bashing and scraping the wheels on the rocks and it'll screw up the paint anyways. I think I'll just leave em be.

The motor isn't too big of a bummer honestly. Back in Feb, it wouldn't even run at all and here I am 8 months later, with 80% of my $ money back in my wallet and the truck at least runs right now and I can get around. The other motor has ~127K and it comes with everything - sensors, alternator, and all the stuff a normal long block wouldn't come with.

In the end, I'll have a good running, low mileage motor. And also Drifter and I have decided to keep my old motor with everything as a spare to cannibalize over the next decade or so. So we'll have just about every spare engine part we'll ever need. The only thing I wouldn't use off my old motor is the D/S head because it still makes valve noise. Everything else is all new or freshly rebuilt.

If I do the engine swap myself, I'll still have a good chunk of $$ left over from the refund and of course a spare motor, so I consider it a score at this point. :)

As far as the SC goes, I know what you mean. In my case though, I think the SC will actually help my motor. I'll still drive it like a grandma, I'll just have the power it needs to haul my heavy junk when I need that power. Right now I feel like I have to lug the engine more than I want to and that's harder on it than a SC would be, at least that's what I'm thinking.

i have a idea why dont you trade truck with me :D

Nice! Not that your truck isn't sweet, it is! But after all the time I've put into my truck, it's sorta like a friend now, or maybe a pet, lol. I wouldn't want a nicer or newer one, even if it was BigFish's or LINY's or Dirtco's or Ripcord's or blcktpgsr's or Troyboy's or so many others who have sweet 4runners. I like mine because it's mine.

...but it does help that it has 35s, dual lockers, 4.88s, armor, and lots of goodies to keep up with the rest of you 4runner addicts! :)
