broken 5100 carnage

Went up to run Signal Peak and after about half way down easy way up over this is what happened, drove about 90 miles home, took forever but made it home.


looks almost like a LBJ failure, got lucky I would say

Seeing as you were on the top setting with the tundra coils, i bet the shock was fully extended all the time which caused the shaft to break.

Sucks for sure but IMHO, it was set too high.

Edit: My bad it wasn't the top setting. The dirt made it look that way. Still probably too high though.

Not sure how much of a no-no it is, but yeah, the top two cup settings are not recommended.

Wow. That sucks. What other related damaged components did you end up with.
other than the shock the axle boot is torn and all scrape up, so need new axle and shock

rear bumper swing out is from savage offroad, well built bumper.

Yeah that's a new one. Were you running a sway bar on the front?

I would have to disagree with the setting on the 5100, tundra coils and tundra 5100 on that setting was about 3.5 inch lift with about 2.5 inch of down travel still, been riding with this setup for awhile, and the shaft didnt break at the same time as the shock lower mount, the lower mount broke first and the shaft broke some time along the way down to the staging area probably from the stress of where the shock was position, the shock was resting on the lower control arm, i strap it so that the shock wouldnt slip off the control, with that angle and all the bumps the shaft couldnt handle it and broke, well thats what im thinking

what i meant was that i was on my way down from Signal Peak and it broke when i went over some small rocks, there is two way up to the peak the hard way and the easy way, went up the hard way with no real issues and on the way down took the easy way, and about 5-6 miles down the lower shock mount snap

It probably broke because the only thing limiting your down travel was the shock itself. The reason I asked about the sway bar was because the sway bar limits the down travel. If you don't have a sway bar then you should have limit straps to prevent this. Just my 2 cents.

What is the section of Signal Peak like where the steel water pipe crosses the trail?

Thats Crazy!! Because when I installed mine I got the Tundra Struts complete with the stock yellow Bilstiens.
When I put on the 5100's I noticed that particular weld (The one on the bottom) was much smaller and poorly executed compared with the OEM Yellow Bilstiens.
It definitely looked like a weak spot to me when I had the two side by side.

Possibly the cause but I know the sway bars are not going back in, will think about the limit strap if I snap another shock, now ill have a spare shock assembly to carry along trail runs

Wet but not too bad, rock in the middle I'm running 265 and air down so I barely clear that rock

I agree that section does look like a weak point, welds don't look so good

and i'm gonna disagree with that.

The TRD Tundra coils usually give about 2.5 inches of lift on the bottom setting on a 4Runner. In Rickashay's OME/Tundra comparison thread, he was dead at 3 inches of lift with the 5100's on the 2nd notch. At the 4th notch, you are going to be way higher than 3.5 inches of lift. Yes you have a bumper but the Addicted bumper is pretty light. Combine that with the 1/4 inch top plate spacer and i bet you were 4+

Also, there is no way that you still had 2.5 inches of down travel at 3.5 inches of lift.

The compressed and extended lengths of the Tundra 5100 is 13.23 inches and 18.68 inches. That means the shock has about 5.45 inches of travel. After factoring in the shock location on the LCA and the bumpstops, wheel travel is about 9 inches. That means at stock height, you have 4.5 inches of compression and 4.5 inches of extension. Lift it 4 inches and you now have 8.5 inches of compression and 0.5 inches of extension. This is why most lift manufacturers only recommend going up 3 inches of lift. With the shock being the extension bumpstop, it can start to have a slidehammer effect on the shock and can cause it to pull apart.
