Bud Built Hidden Winch Regrets?

So, is a removable solenoid required for this winch mount? If so, I'm in trouble. :frusty:

No! I think my build thread may have pics where a notch was needed otherwise the Warn 8000 fit. If I don't maybe others do. I've since upgraded to a Zeon 10k which also fits.

Alex and Tom also have to 8k Warn.

The install is not so hard once you loosen the alum bumper.

So other than the higher capacity what advantages does the Zeon offer? I can't find much information on the reasons for the higher costs.

I use a 12,000lb Titan winch with my hidden which plate.

I have used mine a lot. Only regret is not getting it sooner.

Install is a bit of a PITA because it is a tight fit.
You will probably want to relocate the controls to inside the engine bay, so plan ahead for that with 2ga cable and loom.
The wireless remote is very handy, but make sure you get the new version. I have the old version, and I had to put it on a switch because it draws a good bit of current.

That's funny I just did the same upgrade about two months ago. The new one is much better and I haven't bothered to put the old one on another rig because of the draw.

I really like the BudBuilt hidden winch mount. It was definitely a pain to install and the U-Bolts made me nervous but never let me down. Go for it!

On Tuesday, I will have the new warn remote, along with a contactor to replace my solenoid pack. :bounce:

How does one access the freespool knob using this mount system? Looks like a tight squeeze.

You do not use the lower grill, so lots of room to reach the clutch.

i did this over christmas break on my cousins 5th gen. i didnt find it to be a tight fit. you do remove the bumper support to get it on MCUH easier. I did do it the same way i did my 4th gen. so i was quite familiar with how to install one of these. it took us little over 1.5 hours doing it together.

I used BB winch plate and a Warn VR10000 with external solenoid pack. make a quick bracket to he can get to the port to plug in the controller. notched the top grill a little and ziptied for extra security the solenoid box.

chose a 10k just in case. chose a cheap warn on reputation and the 25 service locations across the country. Engo lost my sale because of that

So far he says no regrets.

One can go crazy trying to determine the ‘right’ equipment to buy. I went with Warn based on its reputation and customer service which I have needed. Upgraded because I needed to pull both the winch (service) and BB plate (replaced with new model that had the light tabs).

The main reasons for the Zeon: better water proofing, uses less power, bigger drum and the 10K is about the same weight. That said I have nothing bad to say about the M8000 and would have been just fine keeping it but the thought of Tom being stuck somewhere without a winch was too much to bear.

Trying to decide hawes vs roller fairlead. Are the rollers fitting the lower grill space easily? I'm planning on mounting lights down there as well....Any trouble accessing the spool release with a roller, or are you guys accessing from the top?

Is get the s, synthetic line is much lighter and much safer. Yes get the Hawes. I have steel on my 4wheeler and within 6 months started rusting.

Even if you sell the truck you can always keep the winch. The m8000 is one if the most tested long lasting winches out there and should last a long time.

Personally, i would get steel. Then if you find yourself using it more and more. get familiar with how to use a winch. then move up to a synthetic. With synthetic you will need to know how to winch properly. you will need to worry about it dragging on something etc. steel not so much. i have used it a few times and i am not a self proclaimed expert, if i went with a synthetic line from the gate, i would be buying another synthetic line right now for another $250.

i went out unprepared and in desperation to get out, wrapped my cable around a tree. big no no, and with a sythetic line i would need a new one now.
