Budbuilt skids incoming. How should I paint?

I bought the Budbuilt skid combo during their free shipping special. Fedex says they should be here by Friday! The incoming package weights 133 lbs so thought I would add a pound or two in paint on top of that :) What would be a good product to paint these? Looking for something that will last long and could be touched up. Would prefure smooth rather then something like bedliner. Should I prime? Color options for me are red, black or white. Leaning towards black and painting the Budbuilt logo white. Here is my rig so you can visualize...

Definitely user primer... and the more the merrier. The skids take a good bit of abuse from road debris alone.

Hammered style paint is good for being able to touch it up later.

Btw - most of the logos you see on the skid are just the white (or lime) vinyl logos
 
First of all, nice clean looking runner. As far as paint, definitely primer. Put on a few coats, followed by a few coats of whatever color you want. I went over the paint with clear coat also just because I had some left over from my rims. Rustoleum works well.

I'd recommend going with a color other than black. That way you can easily identify if you have any fluids leaking, whether it be oil, trans fluid, or coolant.
 
I also vote a color other then black. For the above mentioned reasons and also because thwy just look cooler. See slow t4rs yellow one, cant remember his name but one guys got like a powder blue under his black runner, a number of us have red. And I think 4ripcord was headed towards royal blue.
 
Just make sure it's an easy color to fix, I use black since everything on the truck is black/white and that's how it flows and I don't care much to see the skid anyways.

I use rust converter (which I think has limited colors) and I just spray it down every time I work on the truck since it gets the shit beat out of it routinely.
 
Thanks for the advice thus far. If I painted Black I might do the inside White or some other bright color so it can be easier to see any leaks.
 
I used VHT Chassis and Roll Bar Paint. It doesn't need primer, it comes in multiple colors too. It's cheap, looks good and it's easy to just touch it up after wheeling. Just prep it first with some TSP to clean it all off before painting. Mine came pretty clean from Bud anyway but the TSP will make sure there is no residue and properly prep the surface for paint.

They arrived! Test fitting tonight. Priming over the weekend. Painting over the weekdays and Offloading the following weekend :)

Front weighs ~63 lbs, Belly ~52 lbs

So is that stuff longer lasting and less prone to chipping?

What does TSP stand for and where can you buy it?

She's sooooo nice and clean with the black and white! Don't color the skids!
They will just show dirt in no time at all!

It's supposed to be, but the reality is that the first contact with any rock nothing is going to stay there. After all they are skid plates and made to protect the private parts of your truck so they WILL get banged up.

Here is what it says on their website:

VHT Roll Bar & Chassis Paint is a one step epoxy coating that does not require primer. It gives the appearance of a tough baked-on finish that is chemical, corrosion, rust and salt resistant.

Temperature: 250°F (121°C)

Applications: Frame & Chassis, Shop Racks, Tools & Equipment, Trailers

Finish: Gloss and Satin

Dry Time: Dries to the touch in 30 mins. Dries thoroughly overnight. No curing required.

Trisodium Phosphate, you can get it at any hardware store. There are different kinds and some are a bit safer and gentler than others.

I think I used this 'substitute' version because it wasn't as harsh as the real TSP. At the end of the day you are just trying to remove any oils and contaminants from the surface to prepare it for paint.

Klean-Strip Tri-Sodium Phosphate Substitute is a powerful liquid that cleans, degreases, and deglosses surfaces prior to painting or refinishing. It easily removes grease, grime, smoke residue, food stains, chalky residue, crayon marks, mildew stains, and old wallpaper paste. Ideal for use on interior and exterior hard surfaces such as walls, ceilings, floors, concrete, patio furniture, gutters and decks. Cleaning ingredients in this product are biodegradable

Thanks, they look good. Did you use the Gloss or Satin?
 
Honestly I think that red would look great for the skid plates and rock sliders on your 4Runner.

What about painting the lower section of your doors (below the body crease line) black to tie in with the black on your front and rear bumpers?

For the life of me I cant get the two bolts off the steering rack to install the brace! They are lefty loosy right?
