BudBuilt sliders rusting and new!

So I got new BudBuilt bump out sliders (regular) with full tread and powder coated from BB. I had these on less than 2 weeks and noticed significant early rust developing along the edge of the tread plate. This really pisses me off and now I wish I would have them Linexed before I installed them. May need to remove them have them done in the spring. I am awaiting an email reply from BudBuilt.
Thoughts and comments on what my options are to fix this minor but annoying rusting issue are appreciated. Thanks in advance.

My Rocky Road sliders were horrible after 2 years in the salt/sand in the NE. Powercoating...hahaha. I just had them sandblasted, 2 coats bare metal primer, 2 coats hard enamel paint, 5 coats truck bed liner. I am hoping for about 5 years without having to re-do the process. I was going to have them linex sprayed but the quote kept going up and up so I figured I would see how this lasted.
 
Probably just spots that didn't get powdercoated properly. You could use some rust converter or sand the rust and use some flat black Tremclad or Rustoleum in those cracks. Way easier than removing them to have them sandblasted and powdercoated again.
 
Mine are rusting where the paint has come off. I'll go through the winter and take them off in the spring to refurbish them.

How are yours holding up?
I've got a set that will be installed very soon... this thread has me wondering if I should be taking extra steps to minimize rust before installation.

I didn't bother getting mine powdercoated because I knew from looking at my friends' that it'd just get scraped off. In the spring I take a wire wheel to them and repaint them. If you use them off road nothing will hold up to contact with rocks so might as well use something cheap and easy to touch up.
 
These sliders were installed 2 weeks ago and I have only driven in the showy road conditions, no off-roading. I wouldn't have spent the extra money to powder coat them if they start rusting that quickly.

No shit, but I don't think it should be rusting after a protective powder coating. Now if they were older and beaten up on the trails, I would expect some rusting over scraped areas. This seems like a poor powder coating job to me

Call Bud about it. He doesn't frequent this forum, so complaining about it here won't get you anywhere. As I've said before, he's a super nice guy and I'm sure he'll do everything in his power to make it right by you.

Go back and re-read my first post. The powdercoating didn't get scraped off, it just didn't get into that little gap between the slider and the tread plate. Doesn't take much for bare metal to start showing a little rust in the winter with the snow and road salt.

I agree with the powder coating not getting into the gaps. Do you think this can be touched up with a can of rustoleum easily? I assume this will only get worse with Midwest winter weather.

Sorry, I should have mentioned my intentions before but my off-roading is very mild at this time. I did get the sliders as protection off road but more to protect me from mall cruising door dings and to step up to my roof rack.

Yes, I'd use the Rustoleum with one of those sponge wedge things. If you aren't using any primer first make sure to try to clean and sand it first and use multiple coats. The good news is that since the powdercoat couldn't reach in there easily not a lot of other things will either so it should hold up pretty decently.

I know that Bud would make things right for you if you called him about it, but honestly this'll be way easier and quicker than removing the sliders and sending them back so he can have them redone then him sending them back to you.

Yeah, this exact same thing happened on mine. I didn't worry about it too much but yes, kinda frustrating. Rock rash is one thing but when you pay for the powdercoating, then not long after installing you already have rust?

Wondering if it's worth taking them off next spring and having them redone by a local powdercoater. Or, maybe those with those tiny gaps between the tread plate and sliders we are just better off following what westwind77 did himself for better long term protection? Sanding in these gaps would be pretty difficult. Rustoleum does work really well for touchups, but I haven't done anything on the little rust in the gaps.

Edit: NSW550 please keep us posted on what you hear back from Bud. If I was doing over I would not pay for the powdercoating from Bud but look at other options. From day one I thought Linex would be great.

Hi,
I have the same thing going on and I live in SoCal. I got some WD-40 and sprayed in all the cracks and seams it looks great and lasts for awhile

Sand the spots and paint them. If you actually use the sliders you'll be doing it after every time you wheel anyway.
