Just what it says boys...

I'm going to be installing the winch plate this weekend....so 3 things..

1) Any tips or tricks for a TE model?

2) Can anyone point me to/at install/progress pictures? (my plan is document as I go to accumulate as much knowledge in this thread as possible)

3) Can I install the winch itself later without having to pull the whole fascia off another time?

1. Loosen bolts between the bumper support and frame, and bumper support and bumper. It is a very tight fit and will be frustrating. Cut a notch in the styrofoam part where it goes over the U bolts (you'll know what I mean when installing).
2. Let me google that for you
3. No. The winch must be installed to the mounting plate before the plate is installed to the vehicle. You will also need to have your wiring completed, and you will want to install your winch line before putting the bumper cover back on.

Seeing how the final winch control box is oriented should be a big help. I had zero instructions when i put it in and it was annoying. BB not supplying instructions is stupid. I had it one direction first, even drilled holes, and then had to reverse it.

Anyway, I had to loosen bumper bolts pretty much the whole way. Sliding the plate in and not destroying the air conditioning line is....... Challenging.

Will do..I just called Steve at Southeast Overland to see what his best price is...they're ea great outfit as well. I saw a bunch of good pics(thanks guys) and feel a little better about taking it on.
 
Just in time

I'm ordering my winch plate early next week and I will now have some good reading material to peruse while I wait for Bud to get my mounting plate to me.
 
A little update...

Got my hands on a Ramsey 8000 for a great price, and stripped off the cable and strung on synthetic...got the additional pieces form Southeast Overland here on the East Coast....Steve is a great guy to deal with, good prices with awesome customer service.

Just to double check..I'm mounting everything on the winch plate, then installing the whole mess in one shot? Also looking for any guidance in dropping the front fascia off the truck.

How did you install a new line without it mounted?

For dropping the bumper cover, it is a bunch of push fasteners inside the grill area, some screws around the front fenders, and 2 PITA clips where the bumper cover meets the quarter panel. You have to press pretty hard on the bumper cover to get these clips to disengage.

Might want to trim the white Styrofoam piece that goes between the aluminum bumper and the bumper cover, where the U bolts are, or the Styrofoam may push out on the bumper cover.

Plan where you are going to mount your controls. For the traditional location, you may need to cut some sheet metal, or it may not fit at all. I ran longer leads from the winch motor to the solenoids that I located behind the passenger headlight. Used #2 wire cut to length from Napa, solder terminals, and nylon (poly sucks) fire resistant wire loom.

Bumper cover is very easy to take off. Unscrew 3 bolts on the side and what ever screws are holding the bumper underneath, then pull if it feels like it is steel connected look for more screws.
Loosen the nuts on the bumper itself for easy install of the winch plate.
Make sure the plate fits, turn the tube in front of radiator upward behind the bracket that runs right in the middle, by unscrewing the bracket. The tube has rubber ends so it turns easily.
Screw the winch onto the plate and then place the plate in.
Screw everything back, make sure it is tight.
Hope this helps a little, but there are many people who did it before me and has much better documentation.

Just pulled the truck into the bay at work, hooked jumper cables to the winch and wound that shat on there like nobody's business...:high5:

Thanks Man..a little "clarity goes a long way....here's where it sits right now..

The control box is mounted to the left side round part (the motor), and it has a port to plug the control in...that doesn't stay on the winch itself?....i have to relocate that box in the engine bay?

I thought maybe I would cut an access hole in the plastic piece that fills in between the radiator and front fascia. Then I was going to fasten a "holding box" for the wire and controller.

If that black box with the plug for the remote gets relocated, then I'd have to get new wires to go from the box to motor (there only about 8" long, and the terminal ends snapped when I was disconnecting them for cleaning)...but it would save some work juryrigging something else up.

You're going to want to re-spool that line under tension, once you get it mounted.

Mine is a warn, so the solenoid box is different, but there is not a whole lot of room to work with behind the bumper, especially once you start plugging in winch control cables. It was a lot easier for me to relocate the box in the hood. Better for moisture and dirt exposure, too.

I'm planning to replace my solenoid box with a new contactor type which are likely to be more reliable and much smaller.
