My bug shield at the front hood has always been cracked and brittle. Once a jagged piece caught my arm as I was walking past and put a Y shaped gash in me. Several months after that the whole thing was loose and broken so I had to remove it. Recently I had the great wonderful experience of hitting a pack of love bugs at highway speed. Some did hit the windshield but they always did. This is the effect of not having a bug shield (see image). The shield of course sits at a line even with the top of the headlights.
P.S. I was a trucker for a while, If you drive 500 miles a day in them you learn just how bad dead love bugs stink.
